以掃見以撒已經為雅各祝福，而且送他往巴旦‧亞蘭去，在那裏娶妻，並且見以撒祝福雅各的時候吩咐他說：「不要娶迦南的女子為妻」，又見雅各聽從父母的話往巴旦‧亞蘭去了，以掃就看出他父親以撒看迦南女子不順眼。於是他往以實瑪利那裏去，在兩個妻子之外，又娶了瑪哈拉為妻，她是亞伯拉罕兒子以實瑪利的女兒，是尼拜約的妹妹。

大祭司不可娶寡婦，被休的婦人，或被玷污的妓女為妻；他只可以娶自己百姓中的處女為妻。
