When the people cried out to Moses, he prayed to the Lord and the fire died down.

The people then came to Moses and said,“ We have sinned by speaking against the LORD and against you. Intercede with the LORD so that he will take the snakes away from us.” And Moses interceded for the people.

“ Get away from this community so that I may consume them instantly.” But they fell facedown.Then Moses told Aaron,“ Take your firepan, place fire from the altar in it, and add incense. Go quickly to the community and make atonement for them, because wrath has come from the LORD; the plague has begun.”So Aaron took his firepan as Moses had ordered, ran into the middle of the assembly, and saw that the plague had begun among the people. After he added incense, he made atonement for the people.He stood between the dead and the living, and the plague was halted.

Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is very powerful in its effect.

So Moses returned to the LORD and said,“ Oh, these people have committed a grave sin; they have made a god of gold for themselves.Now if you would only forgive their sin. But if not, please erase me from the book you have written.”

Nevertheless, King Zedekiah sent Jehucal son of Shelemiah and Zephaniah son of Maaseiah, the priest, to the prophet Jeremiah, requesting,“ Please pray to the LORD our God on our behalf!”

Now leave me alone, so that my anger can burn against them and I can destroy them. Then I will make you into a great nation.”But Moses sought the favor of the LORD his God:“ LORD, why does your anger burn against your people you brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and a strong hand?Why should the Egyptians say,‘ He brought them out with an evil intent to kill them in the mountains and eliminate them from the face of the earth’? Turn from your fierce anger and relent concerning this disaster planned for your people.Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac, and Israel— you swore to them by yourself and declared,‘ I will make your offspring as numerous as the stars of the sky and will give your offspring all this land that I have promised, and they will inherit it forever.’”So the LORD relented concerning the disaster he had said he would bring on his people.

Then he said,“ My Lord, if I have indeed found favor with you, my Lord, please go with us( even though this is a stiff-necked people), forgive our iniquity and our sin, and accept us as your own possession.”

Then the LORD said to me,“ Even if Moses and Samuel should stand before me, my compassions would not reach out to these people. Send them from my presence, and let them go.

When the locusts finished eating the vegetation of the land, I said,“ Lord GOD, please forgive! How will Jacob survive since he is so small?”The LORD relented concerning this.“ It will not happen,” he said.The Lord GOD showed me this: The Lord GOD was calling for a judgment by fire. It consumed the great deep and devoured the land.Then I said,“ Lord GOD, please stop! How will Jacob survive since he is so small?”The LORD relented concerning this.“ This will not happen either,” said the Lord GOD.

My little children, I am writing you these things so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father— Jesus Christ the righteous one.He himself is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours, but also for those of the whole world.

For this is the kind of high priest we need: holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens.

“ Pray to the Lord for me,” Simon replied,“ so that nothing you have said may happen to me.”

the prophet Jeremiah and said,“ May our petition come before you; pray to the LORD your God on our behalf, on behalf of this entire remnant( for few of us remain out of the many, as you can see with your own eyes),

I was afraid of the fierce anger the LORD had directed against you, because he was about to destroy you. But again the LORD listened to me on that occasion.The LORD was angry enough with Aaron to destroy him. But I prayed for Aaron at that time also.

Perhaps the LORD your God will hear all the words of the royal spokesman, whom his master the king of Assyria sent to mock the living God, and will rebuke him for the words that the LORD your God has heard. Therefore offer a prayer for the surviving remnant.’”

But Moses replied to the LORD,“ The Egyptians will hear about it, for by your strength you brought up this people from them.They will tell it to the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that you, LORD, are among these people, how you, LORD, are seen face to face, how your cloud stands over them, and how you go before them in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night.If you kill this people with a single blow, the nations that have heard of your fame will declare,‘ Since the LORD wasn’t able to bring this people into the land he swore to give them, he has slaughtered them in the wilderness.’“ So now, may my Lord’s power be magnified just as you have spoken:The LORD is slow to anger and abounding in faithful love, forgiving iniquity and rebellion. But he will not leave the guilty unpunished, bringing the consequences of the fathers’ iniquity on the children to the third and fourth generation.Please pardon the iniquity of this people, in keeping with the greatness of your faithful love, just as you have forgiven them from Egypt until now.”The LORD responded,“ I have pardoned them as you requested.

Abraham stepped forward and said,“ Will you really sweep away the righteous with the wicked?What if there are fifty righteous people in the city? Will you really sweep it away instead of sparing the place for the sake of the fifty righteous people who are in it?You could not possibly do such a thing: to kill the righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous and the wicked alike. You could not possibly do that! Won’t the Judge of the whole earth do what is just?”The LORD said,“ If I find fifty righteous people in the city of Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake.”Then Abraham answered,“ Since I have ventured to speak to my lord— even though I am dust and ashes—suppose the fifty righteous lack five. Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five?” He replied,“ I will not destroy it if I find forty-five there.”Then he spoke to him again,“ Suppose forty are found there?” He answered,“ I will not do it on account of forty.”Then he said,“ Let my lord not be angry, and I will speak further. Suppose thirty are found there?” He answered,“ I will not do it if I find thirty there.”Then he said,“ Since I have ventured to speak to my lord, suppose twenty are found there?” He replied,“ I will not destroy it on account of twenty.”Then he said,“ Let my lord not be angry, and I will speak one more time. Suppose ten are found there?” He answered,“ I will not destroy it on account of ten.”When the LORD had finished speaking with Abraham, he departed, and Abraham returned to his place.

So he said he would have destroyed them— if Moses his chosen one had not stood before him in the breach to turn his wrath away from destroying them.

When he killed some of them, the rest began to seek him; they repented and searched for God.They remembered that God was their rock, the Most High God, their Redeemer.
