If this is how you are going to treat me, please go ahead and kill me— if I have found favor in your eyes— and do not let me face my own ruin.”

他自己在曠野走了一日的路程，來到一棵羅騰樹下，就坐在那裏求死，說：「耶和華啊，現在夠了！求你取我的性命吧，因為我不比我的祖先好。」

耶和華啊，現在求你取走我的性命吧！因為我死了比活着更好。」

「遭受患難的人為何有光賜給他呢？心中愁苦的人為何有生命賜給他呢？他們等死，卻不得死；求死，勝於求隱藏的珍寶。他們尋見墳墓，就歡喜快樂，極其高興。

這就是我所切慕、所盼望的：沒有一事能使我羞愧；反倒凡事坦然無懼，無論是生是死，總要讓基督在我身上照常顯大。因為我活着就是基督，死了就有益處。但是，我在肉身活着，若能有工作的成果，我就不知道該挑選甚麼。我處在兩難之間：我情願離世與基督同在，因為這是好得無比的；然而，我為你們肉身活着更加要緊。

但要讓忍耐發揮完全的功用，使你們能又完全又完整，一無所缺。

「惟願我得着所求的，上帝賞賜我所切望的，願上帝把我壓碎，伸手將我剪除。我因沒有違棄那聖者的言語，就仍以此為安慰，在不止息的痛苦中還可歡躍。

我的痛苦為何長久不止呢？我的傷痕為何無法可醫，不能痊癒呢？難道你以詭詐待我，像流乾的河道嗎？

現在，求你赦免他們的罪；不然，就把我從你所寫的冊上除名。」

甚至我寧可窒息死亡，勝似留我這副骨頭。

我為何出胎見勞碌愁苦，在羞愧中度盡我的年日呢？

太陽出來的時候，上帝安排炎熱的東風，太陽曝曬約拿的頭，使他發昏，他就為自己求死，說：「我死了比活着更好！」上帝對約拿說：「你因這棵蓖麻這樣發怒，對嗎？」他說：「我發怒以至於死，都是對的！」

耶和華已經免去對你的審判，趕出你的仇敵。以色列的王－耶和華在你中間；你必不再懼怕災禍。
