他自己却在旷野走了一天的路，来到一棵罗腾树下，就坐在那里求死，说：“耶和华啊，现在已经够了，求你取我的性命吧，因为我并不比我的列祖好。”

耶和华啊！现在求你取去我的性命吧，因为我死了比活着还好。”

为什么有光明赐给劳碌的人，有生命赐给苦命的人呢？他们想死却死不了，找死胜于找宝藏；他们找到坟墓就高兴，非常欢喜快乐。

我所热切期待和盼望的，就是在凡事上我都不会羞愧，只要满有胆量，不论生死，总要让基督在我身上照常被尊为大。因为我活着就是基督，我死了就有益处。但如果我仍在世上活着，能够使我的工作有成果，我就不知道应该怎样选择了！我处于两难之间，情愿离世与基督同在，因为那是好得无比的。可是为了你们，我更需要活在世上。

但忍耐要坚持到底（“坚持到底”原文作“有完全的功效”），使你们可以完全，毫无缺乏。

但愿我得着我所祈求的，愿神赐我所盼望的。愿他乐意把我压碎，愿他放手把我剪除。这样，我们得安慰，在无情的痛苦之中我还可以欢跃，因为我没有否认那圣者的言语。

我的痛苦为什么长久不止呢？我的创伤为什么无法医治，不得痊愈呢？你对我真的像叫人失望、靠不住的溪流吗？

现在，如果你肯赦免他们的罪，那就好了；如果不肯，求你从你所写的册上把我涂抹吧。”

以致我宁可窒息而死，也不肯保留我这一身的骨头。

我为什么要出母胎，经历劳苦和忧伤，并且我的年日都消逝在羞辱之中呢？

日出的时候，神又安排炎热的东风。烈日晒在约拿的头上，以致发昏，他就为自己求死，说：“我死了比活着还好。”神问约拿：“你因这棵蓖麻这样发怒，对不对呢？”约拿说：“我发怒以至于死都是对的。”

耶和华已经除去你们的刑罚，赶走你们的仇敌。以色列的王，耶和华在你们中间，你们必不再惧怕灾祸。
