自己在曠野走了一天的路程，來到一棵羅騰樹下，坐下來禱告求死，說：「耶和華啊，我受夠了，求你取走我的性命吧，我不比我的祖先強。」

耶和華啊，求你收回我的性命吧，我死了比活著還好！」

「為何賜光給受苦的人，賜生命給心靈痛苦的人？他們等候死亡卻等不到，他們求死勝於求寶藏。他們歸入墳墓時非常快樂，欣喜若狂。

我殷切地期待和盼望：我不會感到任何羞愧，而是放膽無懼，不管是生是死，都要一如既往地使基督在我身上得到尊崇。因為對我來說，活著是為了基督，死了也有益處。如果活在世上，我可以做工，多結果子。我真不知道該怎麼選擇！我處在兩難之間。我情願離開世界，與基督在一起，那實在是再好不過了。可是為了你們，我應該活在世上。

你們要堅忍到底，使你們纯全、完備、毫無缺欠。

唯願我的祈求蒙應允，願上帝成全我的冀望，願祂壓碎我，伸手毀滅我。這樣，我還能感到欣慰，在殘酷的痛苦中雀躍，因我沒有違背聖者之言。

為什麼我的痛楚無休無止？為什麼我的創傷無法醫治？難道你要像一條時斷時流的小溪讓我無法依靠嗎？

懇求你赦免他們的罪，不然請你從你的冊子上抹掉我的名字吧。」

以致我寧願窒息而死，也不願這樣活著。

為什麼我要從母胎出來，經歷患難和痛苦，在羞辱中度過一生呢？

太陽出來的時候，上帝颳起燥熱的東風，烈日把約拿曬得發昏，他就再次求死說：「我死了比活著還好！」上帝對約拿說：「你為這棵蓖麻大發脾氣合理嗎？」約拿回答說：「我就是氣死了也合理。」

耶和華已經撤銷對你的刑罰，趕走你的仇敵，以色列的王耶和華與你同在，你必不再懼怕災禍。
