One day Moses was tending the flock of his father in law, Jethro, the priest of Midian. He led the flock far into the wilderness and came to Sinai, the mountain of God.

For only we who believe can enter his rest. As for the others, God said,“ In my anger I took an oath:‘ They will never enter my place of rest,’” even though this rest has been ready since he made the world.We know it is ready because of the place in the Scriptures where it mentions the seventh day:“ On the seventh day God rested from all his work.”But in the other passage God said,“ They will never enter my place of rest.”So God’s rest is there for people to enter, but those who first heard this good news failed to enter because they disobeyed God.So God set another time for entering his rest, and that time is today. God announced this through David much later in the words already quoted:“ Today when you hear his voice, don’t harden your hearts.”Now if Joshua had succeeded in giving them this rest, God would not have spoken about another day of rest still to come.So there is a special rest still waiting for the people of God.For all who have entered into God’s rest have rested from their labors, just as God did after creating the world.So let us do our best to enter that rest. But if we disobey God, as the people of Israel did, we will fall.

After the battle was over, the troops retreated to their camp, and the elders of Israel asked,“ Why did the Lord allow us to be defeated by the Philistines?” Then they said,“ Let’s bring the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord from Shiloh. If we carry it into battle with us, it will save us from our enemies.”

God has told his people,“ Here is a place of rest; let the weary rest here. This is a place of quiet rest.” But they would not listen.

Then Moses climbed the mountain to appear before God. The Lord called to him from the mountain and said,“ Give these instructions to the family of Jacob; announce it to the descendants of Israel:

Now may the God of peace— who brought up from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great Shepherd of the sheep, and ratified an eternal covenant with his blood—

To the Israelites at the foot of the mountain, the glory of the Lord appeared at the summit like a consuming fire.Then Moses disappeared into the cloud as he climbed higher up the mountain. He remained on the mountain forty days and forty nights.

“ Take this Book of Instruction and place it beside the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord your God, so it may remain there as a witness against the people of Israel.

Look, the Ark of the Covenant, which belongs to the Lord of the whole earth, will lead you across the Jordan River!Now choose twelve men from the tribes of Israel, one from each tribe.The priests will carry the Ark of the Lord, the Lord of all the earth. As soon as their feet touch the water, the flow of water will be cut off upstream, and the river will stand up like a wall.”So the people left their camp to cross the Jordan, and the priests who were carrying the Ark of the Covenant went ahead of them.It was the harvest season, and the Jordan was overflowing its banks. But as soon as the feet of the priests who were carrying the Ark touched the water at the river’s edge,the water above that point began backing up a great distance away at a town called Adam, which is near Zarethan. And the water below that point flowed on to the Dead Sea until the riverbed was dry. Then all the people crossed over near the town of Jericho.Meanwhile, the priests who were carrying the Ark of the Lord’s Covenant stood on dry ground in the middle of the riverbed as the people passed by. They waited there until the whole nation of Israel had crossed the Jordan on dry ground.

So in my anger I took an oath:‘ They will never enter my place of rest.’”

This is what the Lord says:“ Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. Could you build me a temple as good as that? Could you build me such a resting place?

This happened when I was on the mountain receiving the tablets of stone inscribed with the words of the covenant that the Lord had made with you. I was there for forty days and forty nights, and all that time I ate no food and drank no water.

The Israelites went up seeking direction from the Lord.( In those days the Ark of the Covenant of God was in Bethel,

For I will bring them from the north and from the distant corners of the earth. I will not forget the blind and lame, the expectant mothers and women in labor. A great company will return!Tears of joy will stream down their faces, and I will lead them home with great care. They will walk beside quiet streams and on smooth paths where they will not stumble. For I am Israel’s father, and Ephraim is my oldest child.

This is what the Lord says:“ Stop at the crossroads and look around. Ask for the old, godly way, and walk in it. Travel its path, and you will find rest for your souls. But you reply,‘ No, that’s not the road we want!’

“ And when your land is once more filled with people,” says the Lord,“ you will no longer wish for‘ the good old days’ when you possessed the Ark of the Lord’s Covenant. You will not miss those days or even remember them, and there will be no need to rebuild the Ark.

The Lord replied,“ I will personally go with you, Moses, and I will give you rest— everything will be fine for you.”Then Moses said,“ If you don’t personally go with us, don’t make us leave this place.

Then Jesus said,“ Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”

So the Israelites set out from the wilderness of Sinai and traveled on from place to place until the cloud stopped in the wilderness of Paran.

Three days later the Israelite officers went through the camp,giving these instructions to the people:“ When you see the Levitical priests carrying the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord your God, move out from your positions and follow them.Since you have never traveled this way before, they will guide you. Stay about half a mile behind them, keeping a clear distance between you and the Ark. Make sure you don’t come any closer.”Then Joshua told the people,“ Purify yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do great wonders among you.”In the morning Joshua said to the priests,“ Lift up the Ark of the Covenant and lead the people across the river.” And so they started out and went ahead of the people.

Then you can tell them,‘ They remind us that the Jordan River stopped flowing when the Ark of the Lord’s Covenant went across.’ These stones will stand as a memorial among the people of Israel forever.”

I took a solemn oath that day that I would bring them out of Egypt to a land I had discovered and explored for them— a good land, a land flowing with milk and honey, the best of all lands anywhere.
