百姓回到营里，以色列的长老说：“耶和华今日为何使我们败在非利士人面前呢？我们不如将耶和华的约柜从示罗抬到我们这里来，好在我们中间救我们脱离敌人的手。”

他曾对他们说：“你们要使疲乏人得安息，这样才得安息，才得舒畅。”他们却不肯听。

摩西到神那里，耶和华从山上呼唤他说：“你要这样告诉雅各家，晓谕以色列人说：

但愿赐平安的神，就是那凭永约之血、使群羊的大牧人、我主耶稣从死里复活的神，

耶和华的荣耀在山顶上，在以色列人眼前，形状如烈火。摩西进入云中上山，在山上四十昼夜。

“将这律法书放在耶和华你们神的约柜旁，可以在那里见证以色列人的不是；

所以，我在怒中起誓，说：“他们断不可进入我的安息！”

耶和华如此说：“天是我的座位；地是我的脚凳。你们要为我造何等的殿宇？哪里是我安息的地方呢？”

我上了山，要领受两块石版，就是耶和华与你们立约的版。那时我在山上住了四十昼夜，没有吃饭，也没有喝水。

那时，神的约柜在那里；亚伦的孙子、以利亚撒的儿子非尼哈侍立在约柜前。以色列人问耶和华说：“我们当再出去与我们弟兄便雅悯人打仗呢？还是罢兵呢？”耶和华说：“你们当上去，因为明日我必将他们交在你们手中。”

我必将他们从北方领来，从地极招聚；同着他们来的有瞎子、瘸子、孕妇、产妇；他们必成为大帮回到这里来。他们要哭泣而来。我要照他们恳求的引导他们，使他们在河水旁走正直的路，在其上不致绊跌；因为我是以色列的父，以法莲是我的长子。”

耶和华如此说：“你们当站在路上察看，访问古道，哪是善道，便行在其间；这样，你们心里必得安息。他们却说：‘我们不行在其间。’

耶和华说：‘你们在国中生养众多；当那些日子，人必不再提说耶和华的约柜，不追想，不记念，不觉缺少，也不再制造。

耶和华说：“我必亲自和你同去，使你得安息。”摩西说：“你若不亲自和我同去，就不要把我们从这里领上去。

凡劳苦担重担的人可以到我这里来，我就使你们得安息。我心里柔和谦卑，你们当负我的轭，学我的样式；这样，你们心里就必得享安息。因为我的轭是容易的，我的担子是轻省的。”

以色列人就按站往前行，离开西奈的旷野，云彩停住在巴兰的旷野。

过了三天，官长走遍营中，吩咐百姓说：“你们看见耶和华你们神的约柜，又见祭司利未人抬着，就要离开所住的地方，跟着约柜去。只是你们和约柜相离要量二千肘，不可与约柜相近，使你们知道所当走的路，因为这条路你们向来没有走过。”约书亚吩咐百姓说：“你们要自洁，因为明天耶和华必在你们中间行奇事。”约书亚又吩咐祭司说：“你们抬起约柜，在百姓前头过去。”于是他们抬起约柜，在百姓前头走。

你们就对他们说：‘这是因为约旦河的水在耶和华的约柜前断绝；约柜过约旦河的时候，约旦河的水就断绝了。这些石头要作以色列人永远的纪念。’”

那日我向他们起誓，必领他们出埃及地，到我为他们察看的流奶与蜜之地；那地在万国中是有荣耀的。
