When He had finished speaking with him on Mount Sinai, He gave Moses the two tablets of the testimony, tablets of stone, written by the finger of God.

The families of the Gershonites were to camp behind the tabernacle westward,and the leader of the fathers’ households of the Gershonites: Eliasaph the son of Lael.Now the duties of the sons of Gershon in the tent of meeting included the tabernacle and the tent, its covering, and the curtain for the entrance of the tent of meeting,and the curtains of the courtyard, the curtain for the entrance of the courtyard which is around the tabernacle and the altar, and its ropes, according to all the service concerning them.Of Kohath was the family of the Amramites, the family of the Izharites, the family of the Hebronites, and the family of the Uzzielites; these were the families of the Kohathites.In the counting of every male from a month old and upward, there were 8,600, performing the duties of the sanctuary.The families of the sons of Kohath were to camp on the south side of the tabernacle,and the leader of the fathers’ households of the Kohathite families: Elizaphan the son of Uzziel.Now their duties included the ark, the table, the lampstand, the altars, the utensils of the sanctuary with which they minister, the curtain, and all the service concerning them;and Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest was the head of the leaders of Levi, and he had the supervision of those who performed the duties of the sanctuary.Of Merari was the family of the Mahlites and the family of the Mushites; these were the families of Merari.Their numbered men in the counting of every male from a month old and upward: 6,200.And the leader of the fathers’ households of the families of Merari was Zuriel the son of Abihail. They were to camp on the northward side of the tabernacle.Now the appointment of duties of the sons of Merari included the framework of the tabernacle, its bars, its pillars, its bases, all its equipment, and all the service concerning them,and the pillars around the courtyard with their bases, their pegs, and their ropes.Now those who were to camp in front of the tabernacle eastward, in front of the tent of meeting toward the sunrise, were Moses and Aaron and his sons, performing the duties of the sanctuary for the obligation of the sons of Israel; but the layman coming near was to be put to death.

they shall carry the curtains of the tabernacle and the tent of meeting with its covering and the covering of fine leather that is on top of it, and the curtain for the entrance of the tent of meeting,and the curtains of the courtyard, the curtain for the entrance of the gate of the courtyard that is around the tabernacle and the altar, and their ropes and all the equipment for their service; and everything that is to be done by them, they shall perform.All the service of the sons of the Gershonites, that is, all their loads and all their work, shall be performed at the command of Aaron and his sons; and you shall assign to them as a duty all their loads.This is the service of the families of the sons of the Gershonites in the tent of meeting; and their duties shall be under the direction of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.“ As for the sons of Merari, you shall count them by their families, by their fathers’ households;from thirty years old and upward, even to fifty years old, you shall count them, everyone who can enter the service to do the work of the tent of meeting.Now this is the duty of their loads, for all their service in the tent of meeting: the boards of the tabernacle, its bars, its pillars, and its bases,and the pillars around the courtyard and their bases, their pegs, and their ropes, with all their equipment and with all their service; and you shall assign by names of the men the items that each is to carry.This is the service of the families of the sons of Merari, according to all their service in the tent of meeting, under the direction of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.”

I also discovered that the portions of the Levites had not been given to them, so the Levites and the singers who performed the service had gone away, each to his own field.So I reprimanded the officials and said,“ Why has the house of God been neglected?” Then I gathered them together and stationed them at their posts.All Judah then brought the tithe of the grain, wine, and oil into the storehouses.To be in charge of the storehouses, I appointed Shelemiah the priest, Zadok the scribe, and Pedaiah from the Levites, and in addition to them was Hanan the son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah; for they were considered reliable, and it was their task to distribute to their kinsmen.

And I ordered the Levites that they were to purify themselves and come as gatekeepers to sanctify the Sabbath day. For this also remember me, my God, and have compassion on me according to the greatness of Your mercy.

Moses then stood at the gate of the camp, and said,“ Whoever is for the Lord, come to me!” And all the sons of Levi gathered together to him.And he said to them,“ This is what the Lord, the God of Israel says:‘ Every man of you put his sword on his thigh, and go back and forth from gate to gate in the camp, and kill every man his brother, and every man his friend, and every man his neighbor.’ ”So the sons of Levi did as Moses instructed, and about three thousand men of the people fell that day.Then Moses said,“ Dedicate yourselves today to the Lord— for every man has been against his son and against his brother— in order that He may bestow a blessing upon you today.”

So all Israel in the days of Zerubbabel and Nehemiah gave the portions due the singers and the gatekeepers as each day required, and they set apart the consecrated portion for the Levites, and the Levites set apart the consecrated portion for the sons of Aaron.

and I weighed out to them the silver, the gold, and the utensils, the offering for the house of our God which the king, his counselors, his officials, and all Israel who were present there had contributed.So I weighed into their hands 650 talents of silver, and silver utensils worth a hundred talents, and a hundred gold talents,and twenty gold bowls worth a thousand darics, and two utensils of fine shiny bronze, precious as gold.Then I said to them,“ You are holy to the Lord, and the utensils are holy; and the silver and the gold are a voluntary offering to the Lord God of your fathers.Watch and keep them until you weigh them before the leading priests, the Levites, and the leaders of the fathers’ households of Israel in Jerusalem, in the chambers of the house of the Lord.”So the priests and the Levites accepted the weight of silver and gold and the utensils, to bring them to Jerusalem to the house of our God.

As for the Levites, the heads of fathers’ households were registered in the days of Eliashib, Joiada, and Johanan, and Jaddua; so were the priests in the reign of Darius the Persian.

Now these are the records of the generations of Aaron and Moses at the time when the Lord spoke with Moses on Mount Sinai.These then are the names of the sons of Aaron: Nadab the firstborn, and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.These are the names of the sons of Aaron, the anointed priests, whom he ordained to serve as priests.But Nadab and Abihu died in the presence of the Lord when they offered strange fire before the Lord in the wilderness of Sinai; and they had no children. So Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests in the lifetime of their father Aaron.Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,“ Bring the tribe of Levi forward and present them before Aaron the priest, that they may serve him.They shall perform the duties for him and for the whole congregation in front of the tent of meeting, to do the service of the tabernacle.They shall also take care of all the furnishings of the tent of meeting, along with the duties of the sons of Israel, to do the service of the tabernacle.So you shall assign the Levites to Aaron and to his sons; they are exclusively assigned to him from the sons of Israel.So you shall appoint Aaron and his sons that they may keep their priesthood, but the layman who comes near shall be put to death.”

And the Levites were Jeshua, Binnui, Kadmiel, Sherebiah, Judah, and Mattaniah who was in charge of the songs of thanksgiving, he and his brothers.

Now when David reached old age, he made his son Solomon king over Israel.And he gathered together all the leaders of Israel with the priests and the Levites.Now the Levites were counted from thirty years old and upward, and their number by head count of men was thirty eight thousand.Of these, twenty four thousand were to oversee the work of the house of the Lord; and six thousand were officers and judges,and four thousand were gatekeepers, and four thousand were praising the Lord with the instruments which David made for giving praise.David divided them into divisions according to the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.Of the Gershonites there were Ladan and Shimei.The sons of Ladan were Jehiel the first, and Zetham and Joel, three.The sons of Shimei were Shelomoth, Haziel, and Haran, three. These were the heads of the fathers’ households of Ladan.The sons of Shimei were Jahath, Zina, Jeush, and Beriah. These four were the sons of Shimei.Jahath was the first and Zizah the second; but Jeush and Beriah did not have many sons, so they became a father’s household, one group for duty.The sons of Kohath were four in number: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel.The sons of Amram were Aaron and Moses. And Aaron was set apart to sanctify him as most holy, he and his sons forever, to burn incense before the Lord, to serve Him and bless in His name forever.But as for Moses, the man of God, his sons were named among the tribe of Levi.The sons of Moses were Gershom and Eliezer.The son of Gershom was Shebuel the chief.The son of Eliezer was Rehabiah the chief; and Eliezer had no other sons, but the sons of Rehabiah were very many.The son of Izhar was Shelomith the chief.The sons of Hebron were Jeriah the first, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third, and Jekameam the fourth.The sons of Uzziel were Micah the first and Isshiah the second.The sons of Merari were Mahli and Mushi. The sons of Mahli were Eleazar and Kish.Eleazar died and had no sons, but only daughters; so their relatives, the sons of Kish, took them as wives.The sons of Mushi were three: Mahli, Eder, and Jeremoth.These were the sons of Levi according to their fathers’ households, the heads of the fathers’ households of those among them who were counted, in the number of names by their head count, doing the work for the service of the house of the Lord, from twenty years old and upward.For David said,“ The Lord God of Israel has given rest to His people, and He dwells in Jerusalem forever.Also, the Levites will no longer need to carry the tabernacle and all its utensils for its service.”For by the last words of David, the sons of Levi were counted from twenty years old and upward.For their office is to assist the sons of Aaron with the service of the house of the Lord, in the courtyards and in the chambers, and in the purification of all holy things, and the work of the service of the house of God,and with the showbread, and the fine flour for a grain offering, and unleavened wafers, or what is baked in the pan or what is well mixed, and all measures of volume and size.They are to stand every morning to thank and to praise the Lord, and likewise at evening,and to offer all burnt offerings to the Lord, on the Sabbaths, the new moons and the appointed festivals, in the number determined by the ordinance concerning them, continually before the Lord.So they are to perform the duties of the tent of meeting, the holy place, and of assisting the sons of Aaron their relatives, for the service of the house of the Lord.

To which the tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord— An ordinance for Israel— To give thanks to the name of the Lord.

But the Levites shall camp around the tabernacle of the testimony, so that there will be no divine wrath against the congregation of the sons of Israel. So the Levites shall be responsible for service to the tabernacle of the testimony.”

Then the Kohathites set out, carrying the holy objects; and the tabernacle was set up before their arrival.

Then Moses raised his hand and struck the rock twice with his staff; and water came out abundantly, and the congregation and their livestock drank.

“ Then the tent of meeting shall set out with the camp of the Levites in the midst of the camps; just as they camp, so they shall set out, every man in his place by their flags.

And on the fourth day the silver, the gold, and the utensils were weighed out in the house of our God into the hand of Meremoth the son of Uriah the priest, and with him was Eleazar the son of Phinehas; and with them were the Levites, Jozabad the son of Jeshua and Noadiah the son of Binnui.A notation was made for everything by number and weight, and all the weight was recorded at that time.

had prepared a large room for him, where previously they used to put the grain offerings, the frankincense, the utensils and the tithes of grain, wine, and oil prescribed for the Levites, the singers, and the gatekeepers, and the contributions for the priests.

Moreover, David and the commanders of the army set apart for the service some of the sons of Asaph, Heman, and Jeduthun, who were to prophesy with lyres, harps, and cymbals; and the number of those who performed this service was:Of the sons of Asaph: Zaccur, Joseph, Nethaniah, and Asharelah; the sons of Asaph were under the direction of Asaph, who prophesied under the direction of the king.Of Jeduthun, the sons of Jeduthun: Gedaliah, Zeri, Jeshaiah, Shimei, Hashabiah, and Mattithiah, six in all, under the direction of their father Jeduthun with the harp, who prophesied in giving thanks and praising the Lord.Of Heman, the sons of Heman: Bukkiah, Mattaniah, Uzziel, Shebuel and Jerimoth, Hananiah, Hanani, Eliathah, Giddalti and Romamti ezer, Joshbekashah, Mallothi, Hothir, and Mahazioth.All these were the sons of Heman the king’s seer to exalt him according to the words of God, for God gave fourteen sons and three daughters to Heman.All of these were under the direction of their father to sing in the house of the Lord, with cymbals, harps, and lyres, for the service of the house of God. Asaph, Jeduthun, and Heman were under the direction of the king.Their number who were trained in singing to the Lord, with their relatives, all who were skillful, was 288.They cast lots for their duties, all alike, the small as well as the great, the teacher as well as the pupil.Now the first lot came out for Asaph to Joseph, the second for Gedaliah, he with his relatives and sons were twelve;the third to Zaccur, his sons and his relatives, twelve;the fourth to Izri, his sons and his relatives, twelve;the fifth to Nethaniah, his sons and his relatives, twelve;the sixth to Bukkiah, his sons and his relatives, twelve;the seventh to Jesharelah, his sons and his relatives, twelve;the eighth to Jeshaiah, his sons and his relatives, twelve;the ninth to Mattaniah, his sons and his relatives, twelve;the tenth to Shimei, his sons and his relatives, twelve;the eleventh to Azarel, his sons and his relatives, twelve;the twelfth to Hashabiah, his sons and his relatives, twelve;for the thirteenth, Shubael, his sons and his relatives, twelve;for the fourteenth, Mattithiah, his sons and his relatives, twelve;for the fifteenth to Jeremoth, his sons and his relatives, twelve;for the sixteenth to Hananiah, his sons and his relatives, twelve;for the seventeenth to Joshbekashah, his sons and his relatives, twelve;for the eighteenth to Hanani, his sons and his relatives, twelve;for the nineteenth to Mallothi, his sons and his relatives, twelve;
