耶和華又向以色列人發怒，祂促使大衛來對付他們，讓大衛統計以色列和猶大的人口。大衛對統領軍隊的約押說：「你去走遍以色列各支派，從但到別示巴，統計以色列和猶大的人口，讓我知道國民的數目。」約押說：「我主我王，願你的上帝耶和華使國民增加百倍，讓你親眼看到。但我主我王為什麼要統計人口呢？」

猶大支派中，二十歲以上、有作戰能力的男子按宗族、家系和姓名一一被登記下來，共有七萬四千六百人。

大衛沒有統計二十歲以下的以色列人，因為耶和華曾經應許要使以色列的人數像天上的星那樣多。洗魯雅的兒子約押開始統計人數，但沒有完成，因為耶和華因此事而向以色列人發烈怒，因此統計的數目沒有收錄在大衛王記上。

以下是以色列各宗族族長的名字：以色列長子呂便的兒子是哈諾、法路、希斯崙和迦米。這些是呂便的宗族。西緬的兒子是耶姆利、雅憫、阿轄、雅斤、瑣轄和掃羅，掃羅的母親是迦南人。這些是西緬的各宗族。利未的兒子依次是革順、哥轄和米拉利，利未享年一百三十七歲。革順的兒子是立尼和示每，二人各成宗族。哥轄的兒子是暗蘭、以斯哈、希伯崙和烏薛，哥轄享年一百三十三歲。米拉利的兒子是抹利和姆示。這些是利未的各宗族。
