耶和华又向以色列人发怒，祂促使大卫来对付他们，让大卫统计以色列和犹大的人口。大卫对统领军队的约押说：“你去走遍以色列各支派，从但到别示巴，统计以色列和犹大的人口，让我知道国民的数目。”约押说：“我主我王，愿你的上帝耶和华使国民增加百倍，让你亲眼看到。但我主我王为什么要统计人口呢？”

犹大支派中，二十岁以上、有作战能力的男子按宗族、家系和姓名一一被登记下来，共有七万四千六百人。

大卫没有统计二十岁以下的以色列人，因为耶和华曾经应许要使以色列的人数像天上的星那样多。洗鲁雅的儿子约押开始统计人数，但没有完成，因为耶和华因此事而向以色列人发烈怒，因此统计的数目没有收录在大卫王记上。

以下是以色列各宗族族长的名字：以色列长子吕便的儿子是哈诺、法路、希斯仑和迦米。这些是吕便的宗族。西缅的儿子是耶姆利、雅悯、阿辖、雅斤、琐辖和扫罗，扫罗的母亲是迦南人。这些是西缅的各宗族。利未的儿子依次是革顺、哥辖和米拉利，利未享年一百三十七岁。革顺的儿子是立尼和示每，二人各成宗族。哥辖的儿子是暗兰、以斯哈、希伯仑和乌薛，哥辖享年一百三十三岁。米拉利的儿子是抹利和姆示。这些是利未的各宗族。
