On the twenty-fourth day of the same month, the Israelites gathered together, fasting and wearing sackcloth and putting dust on their heads.

It was the 24th day of the seventh month. The Israelites gathered together again. They didn’t eat any food. They wore the rough clothing people wear when they’re sad. They put dust on their heads.

Now on the twenty-fourth day of this month the people of Israel were assembled with fasting and in sackcloth, and with earth on their heads.

On October 31 the people assembled again, and this time they fasted and dressed in burlap and sprinkled dust on their heads.

「你當去召集書珊所有的猶太人，為我禁食三晝三夜，不吃不喝；我和我的宮女也要這樣禁食。然後我違例去晉見王，我若死就死吧！」

他們遠遠地舉目觀看，認不出他來，就放聲大哭。各人撕裂外袍，向空中撒塵土，落在自己的頭上。

「你要吩咐以色列人說：這七月十五日是住棚節，要向耶和華守這節七日。

當那日，萬軍之主耶和華使人哭泣哀號，頭上光禿，身披麻布。

以色列眾人和全體士兵上到伯特利，坐在耶和華面前哭泣。那日，他們禁食直到晚上，又在耶和華面前獻燔祭和平安祭。

祭司啊，當束上麻布痛哭；事奉祭壇的啊，要哀號；事奉我上帝的啊，你們要來，披上麻布過夜，因為在你們上帝的殿中不再有素祭和澆酒祭了。你們要使禁食的日子分別為聖，宣告嚴肅會，召集長老和這地所有的居民來到耶和華－你們上帝的殿，向耶和華哀求。

尼尼微人就信服上帝，宣告禁食，從最大的到最小的都穿上麻衣。這消息傳到尼尼微王那裏，他就從寶座起來，脫下朝服，披上麻布，坐在灰中。他叫人通告尼尼微全城，說：「王和大臣有令，人、畜、牛、羊都不可嘗任何東西，不可吃，也不可喝水。人與牲畜都要披上麻布，切切求告上帝。各人要回轉離開惡道，離棄自己掌中的殘暴。

約沙法懼怕，就定意尋求耶和華，在全猶大宣告禁食。

七月二十三日，王差遣百姓回自己的帳棚去；他們為耶和華向大衛和所羅門，以及他百姓以色列所施的恩惠，心裏都歡喜快樂。

你們要在錫安吹角，使禁食的日子分別為聖，宣告嚴肅會。聚集百姓，使會眾自潔；召集老年人，聚集孩童和在母懷吃奶的；使新郎出內室，新娘離開洞房。事奉耶和華的祭司要在走廊和祭壇間哭泣，說：「耶和華啊，求你顧惜你的百姓，不要使你的產業受羞辱，在列國中成為笑柄。為何讓人在萬民中說『他們的上帝在哪裏』呢？」
