On the twenty-fourth day of the same month, the Israelites gathered together, fasting and wearing sackcloth and putting dust on their heads.

It was the 24th day of the seventh month. The Israelites gathered together again. They didn’t eat any food. They wore the rough clothing people wear when they’re sad. They put dust on their heads.

Now on the twenty-fourth day of this month the people of Israel were assembled with fasting and in sackcloth, and with earth on their heads.

On October 31 the people assembled again, and this time they fasted and dressed in burlap and sprinkled dust on their heads.

约书亚就撕裂自己的衣服，和以色列人的长老，在耶和华的约柜前，一同俯伏在地，直到晚上，也把尘土撒在头上。

有一个便雅悯人跑离战场，衣服撕裂，头蒙尘土，当天来到示罗。

他们事奉主，并且禁食的时候，圣灵说：“要为我把巴拿巴和扫罗分别出来，去作我呼召他们作的工。”于是他们禁食祷告，为两人按手，就派他们去了。

第三天，忽然有一个人从扫罗的营回来，衣服撕裂，头上蒙灰。这人一来到大卫面前，就俯伏在地上叩拜他。

王的谕旨和命令传到的各省各地，犹大人都大大悲哀，禁食、哭泣、悲伤；许多人披上麻衣，躺在灰尘中。

“又在七月十五日，你们收了那地的出产以后，要守耶和华的节七日，第一天要完全休歇，第八天也要完全休歇。

“你要去，把书珊城所有的犹大人都召集起来，为我禁食三天，就是三日三夜不吃不喝；我和我的婢女也要这样禁食。然后我就违例进去见王；我若是死，就死吧。”

他们从远处举目观望，竟认不出他来，就放声大哭，各自撕裂外袍，向天扬起尘土，落在自己头上。

“你要告诉以色列人：七月十五日是住棚节，要在耶和华面前守这七天的节期。

到那日，主万军之耶和华叫人哭泣哀号，剃光头发，穿上麻布。

以色列众人，就是全体人民，又上到伯特利，坐在耶和华面前哀哭，那日禁食直到晚上，然后在耶和华面前献上燔祭和平安祭。

祭司啊！你们要腰束麻布，并且痛哭。在祭坛侍候的啊！你们要哀号。事奉我的神的啊！你们披上麻布进去过夜吧，因为素祭和奠祭，都从你们的神的殿中止息了。你们要把禁食的日子分别为圣，召开严肃会，聚集众长老和国中所有的居民，到你们的神耶和华的殿里，向耶和华呼求。

尼尼微人信了（“信了”或译：“信服”）神，就宣告禁食，从大到小，都穿上麻衣。这事传到尼尼微王那里，他就起来，离开宝座，脱去王袍，披上麻衣，坐在炉灰中。他又传谕全尼尼微，说：“王和大臣有令：‘人、畜、牛、羊，都不准尝什么，不准吃，也不准喝。不论人畜，都要披上麻衣；各人要恳切呼求神，悔改，离开恶行，摒弃手中的强暴。

于是约沙法害怕起来，定意要寻求耶和华，就在犹大全地宣告禁食。

七月二十三日，王遣散众民回家；他们因看见耶和华向大卫、所罗门和他的子民以色列所施的恩惠，心里都欢喜快乐。

你们要在锡安吹号角，把禁食的日子分别为圣，召开严肃会。你们要召集民众，使会众分别为圣；招聚老人，聚集孩童，和在怀中吃奶的婴孩；让新郎从新房出来，新妇从内室出来。让事奉耶和华的祭司在圣殿的廊子和祭坛之间哭泣，让他们说：“耶和华啊！求你怜恤你的子民。不要使你的产业受羞辱，使他们在列国中成为笑谈。为什么容人在万民中讥笑说：‘他们的神在哪里呢？’”
