Then Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priest and teacher of the Law, and the Levites who were instructing the people said to them all,“ This day is holy to the Lord your God. Do not mourn or weep.” For all the people had been weeping as they listened to the words of the Law.

Nehemiah was the governor. Ezra was a priest and the teacher of the Law. They spoke up. So did the Levites who were teaching the people. All these men said to the people,“ This day is set apart to honor the Lord your God. So don’t weep. Don’t be sad.” All the people had been weeping as they listened to the words of the Law.

And Nehemiah, who was the governor, and Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people said to all the people,“ This day is holy to the Lord your God; do not mourn or weep.” For all the people wept as they heard the words of the Law.

七月一日、祭司以斯拉將律法書帶到一切聽了能明白的男女大眾面前。

在那裏、你們在永恆主你們的上帝面前、你們和你們的家眷都要喫喝；並且要因你們下手辦的一切事都蒙永恆主你的上帝賜福而歡樂。

你們要在永恆主你們的上帝面前歡樂，你們跟你們的兒子和女兒、你們的奴僕和使女、以及在你們城內的利未人、都要歡樂，因為利未人不同你們一樣有分有業。

哭有時，笑有時；舉哀有時，踴躍有時；

蓋印的是以下這些人：哈迦利亞的兒子巡撫尼希米和西底家、

過節的時候、你要歡樂，你跟你兒子和女兒、你的奴僕和使女、以及在你城內的利未人、寄居者、孤兒、寡婦、都要歡樂。你要在永恆主所要選擇的地方、過節拜永恆主你的上帝；因為永恆主你的上帝在你一切的出產上、和你手裏辦的一切事上、必賜福與你，你就要痛痛快快地歡樂。

『你要告訴以色列人說；七月初一日、你們要完全歇息，要大吹號筒做記念日，要有聖聚會。

要在永恆主你的上帝面前歡樂，你跟你兒子和女兒、你的奴僕和使女、以及在你城內的利未人、跟在你中間的寄居者和孤兒寡婦、都要在永恆主你的上帝所要選擇做他名之居所的地方歡樂。

省長大人便告訴他們不可喫至聖之物，要等到有能用烏陵土明來決疑的祭司立起來。

七月初一日、你們要有聖聚會；甚麼勞碌的工都不可作。這是你們大吹角聲的日子。你們要把燔祭做怡神之香氣獻與永恆主：就是牛一隻，要小公牛、公綿羊一隻、公綿羊羔一歲以內的七隻、要完全沒有殘疾的。和以上這些祭牲同獻的素祭、是用油調和的細麵：配合一隻公牛、要獻一伊法的十分之三；配合一隻公綿羊、要獻一伊法的十分之二；配合那七隻公綿羊羔、每隻要獻一伊法的十分之一；也獻一隻多毛公山羊做解罪祭、為你們除罪；這些是在月初的燔祭和跟燔祭同獻的素祭、不斷獻的燔祭和跟這燔祭同獻的素祭、以及照典章跟這些祭牲同獻的奠祭以外獻上、作為怡神之香氣、做火祭獻與永恆主的。

從前在律法以外、我活着；誡命一來到，罪活了起來，我就死了。

祭司以斯拉是個經學士、精於永恆主誡命的話、和永恆主給以色列的律例。以下這一段是亞達薛西王寄給以斯拉的上諭本子：

分派給錫安悲哀的人，賜給他們華帽以代替爐灰，喜樂油以代替悲哀，頌讚之披風以代替暗淡沮喪之靈，使他們稱為義氣之篤耨香，是永恆主所栽種，以使自己得榮美的。

我沒有在居喪時候喫這聖物，也沒有在不潔淨時候肅清它，又沒有把它做死人的用處：我聽從了永恆主我的上帝的聲音，都照你所吩咐我的行了。

他又對那些歸永恆主為聖的、指導以色列眾人的利未人說：『你們要將聖櫃安放在以色列王大衛的兒子所羅門所建造的殿裏；不必再用肩膀去扛。現在你們要事奉永恆主你們的上帝，服事他的人民以色列。

耶書亞、巴尼、示利比、雅憫、亞谷、沙比太、荷第雅、瑪西雅、基利他、亞撒利雅、約撒拔、哈難、毘萊雅，這些利未人幫助人民明白律法；人民始終站着。以斯拉清清楚楚地唸那書卷，誦讀上帝的律法，講明意義，使人民明白所誦讀的。

希西家說好話向一切精練於事奉永恆主的利未人表示關心；於是眾人喫了這制定節期的筵席七天，宰獻着平安祭，稱謝永恆主他們列祖的上帝。

你一聽見我指着這地方和這地方的居民所說的話說，要使這地成了令人驚駭、令人咒詛的對象，你的心便軟了下來，你就在我永恆主面前自己謙卑，又撕裂了衣服，又在我面前哭，因此我也垂聽你的禱告；這是永恆主發神諭說的。

如今我歡喜，倒不是因為你們憂愁，乃是因為你們憂愁到懊悔。你們依順着上帝而憂愁，就不至於在甚麼事上因我們而有所虧損了。因為依順着上帝而有的憂愁能生出不後悔的懺悔來、以至於得救；而世俗的憂愁卻能生出死亡。你看，你們依順着上帝而憂愁，這在你們中間已生出了何等的熱切、何等的分訴、何等的憤慨、何等的危懼、何等的切慕、何等的熱誠、何等的公正責罰啊！在各方面、你們都證明自己在那事上清清白白。

我的人民因無知識而被毁滅；你、你既棄絕了知識，我也必棄絕你、不讓你做我的祭司。你既忘了你的上帝的禮節規矩，我、我也必忘了你的兒女。

這些人都是當約撒達的孫子耶書亞的兒子約雅金的日子、當巡撫尼希米和祭司經學士以斯拉的日子、任職的。

王聽見《律法書》上的話，便撕裂衣服。

所以血肉人在上帝面前、都不能由律法上的行為得稱為義：因為由於律法、人才認識罪。

以色列人沒有可信可靠的上帝，沒有指教他們的祭司，沒有禮節的規矩、已有好多年日了；

以下這樣的事你們又行了。你們將妻子的眼淚哭泣和唉哼、遮蓋了永恆主的祭壇，因為永恆主不再垂顧供物，不再喜悅從你們手中收納。

王聽見《律法書》上的話，便撕裂衣服。

『你們去，為我、為以色列中和猶大中的餘民、將所發現這一卷書上的話尋問永恆主；因為永恆主的烈怒倒在我們身上來的很大；這是因為我們列祖沒有遵守永恆主的話，沒有照一切寫在這書上的去行的緣故。』
