到了七月，以色列人住在各城；那時他們如同一人，聚集在耶路撒冷。約薩達兒子耶書亞和他的弟兄眾祭司，並撒拉鐵的兒子所羅巴伯與他的弟兄，都起來建築以色列神的壇，要照神人摩西律法書上所寫的，在壇上獻燔祭。他們在原有的根基上築壇，因懼怕鄰國的民，又在其上向耶和華早晚獻燔祭，又照律法書上所寫的守住棚節，按數照例獻每日所當獻的燔祭；其後獻常獻的燔祭，並在月朔與耶和華的一切聖節獻祭，又向耶和華獻各人的甘心祭。從七月初一日起，他們就向耶和華獻燔祭。但耶和華殿的根基尚未立定。他們又將銀子給石匠、木匠，把糧食、酒、油給西頓人、泰爾人，使他們將香柏樹從黎巴嫩運到海裏，浮海運到約帕，是照波斯王塞魯士所允准的。百姓到了耶路撒冷神殿的地方。第二年二月，撒拉鐵的兒子所羅巴伯，約薩達的兒子耶書亞和其餘的弟兄，就是祭司、利未人，並一切被擄歸回耶路撒冷的人，都興工建造；又派利未人，從二十歲以外的，督理建造耶和華殿的工作。於是猶大的後裔，就是耶書亞和他的子孫與弟兄，甲篾和他的子孫，利未人希拿達的子孫與弟兄，都一同起來，督理那在神殿做工的人。匠人立耶和華殿根基的時候，祭司皆穿禮服吹號，亞薩的子孫利未人敲鈸，照以色列王大衛所定的例，都站着讚美耶和華。他們彼此唱和，讚美稱謝耶和華說：他本為善，他向以色列人永發慈愛。他們讚美耶和華的時候，眾民大聲呼喊，因耶和華殿的根基已經立定。然而有許多祭司、利未人、族長，就是見過舊殿的老年人，現在親眼看見立這殿的根基，便大聲哭號，也有許多人大聲歡呼，甚至百姓不能分辨歡呼的聲音和哭號的聲音；因為眾人大聲呼喊，聲音聽到遠處。

人當以訓誨和法度為標準；他們所說的，若不與此相符，必不得見晨光。

於是以色列從但到別是巴，以及住基列地的眾人都出來，如同一人，聚集在米斯巴耶和華面前。

他們經過泉門往前，從大衛城的臺階隨地勢而上，在大衛宮殿以上，直行到朝東的水門。

於是百姓出去，取了樹枝來，各人在自己的房頂上，或院內，或神殿的院內，或水門的寬闊處，或以法蓮門的寬闊處搭棚。

「你們當記念我僕人摩西的律法，就是我在何烈山為以色列眾人所吩咐他的律例典章。

所以我差遣先知和智慧人並文士到你們這裏來，有的你們要殺害，要釘十字架；有的你們要在會堂裏鞭打，從這城追逼到那城，

你們怎麼說：我們有智慧，耶和華的律法在我們這裏？看哪，文士的假筆舞弄虛假。智慧人慚愧，驚惶，被擒拿；他們棄掉耶和華的話，心裏還有甚麼智慧呢？

眾民都起來如同一人，說：「我們連一人都不回自己帳棚、自己房屋去。

他說：「凡文士受教作天國的門徒，就像一個家主從他庫裏拿出新舊的東西來。」

「你們這假冒為善的文士和法利賽人有禍了！因為你們正當人前，把天國的門關了，自己不進去，正要進去的人，你們也不容他們進去。

說：「文士和法利賽人坐在摩西的位上，

文士以斯拉站在為這事特備的木臺上。瑪他提雅、示瑪、亞奈雅、烏利亞、希勒家，和瑪西雅站在他的右邊；毗大雅、米沙利、瑪基雅、哈順、哈拔大拿、撒迦利亞，和米書蘭站在他的左邊。以斯拉站在眾民以上，在眾民眼前展開這書。他一展開，眾民就都站起來。以斯拉稱頌耶和華至大的神；眾民都舉手應聲說：「阿們！阿們！」就低頭，面伏於地，敬拜耶和華。耶書亞、巴尼、示利比、雅憫、亞谷、沙比太、荷第雅、瑪西雅、基利他、亞撒利雅、約撒拔、哈難、毗萊雅，和利未人使百姓明白律法；百姓都站在自己的地方。他們清清楚楚地念神的律法書，講明意思，使百姓明白所念的。省長尼希米和作祭司的文士以斯拉，並教訓百姓的利未人，對眾民說：「今日是耶和華－你們神的聖日，不要悲哀哭泣。」這是因為眾民聽見律法書上的話都哭了；
