My God placed it on my heart to gather the leaders, the officials, and the ordinary people so they could be enrolled on the basis of genealogy. I found the genealogical records of those who had formerly returned. Here is what I found written in that record:

So my God put it into my heart to assemble the nobles, the officials and the common people for registration by families. I found the genealogical record of those who had been the first to return. This is what I found written there:

So my God gave me the idea and encouraged me to gather the people together. He also encouraged me to gather the nobles and officials together with them. He wanted me to list them by families. I found the family history of those who had been the first to return. Here is what I found written in it.

So my God gave me the idea to call together all the nobles and leaders of the city, along with the ordinary citizens, for registration. I had found the genealogical record of those who had first returned to Judah. This is what was written there:

And my God put into mine heart to gather together the nobles, and the rulers, and the people, that they might be reckoned by genealogy. And I found a register of the genealogy of them which came up at the first, and found written therein,

They searched for their records in the genealogical materials, but did not find them. They were therefore excluded from the priesthood.

Remember, O my God, Tobiah and Sanballat in light of these actions of theirs– also Noadiah the prophetess and the other prophets who were trying to scare me!

But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me has not been in vain. In fact, I worked harder than all of them– yet not I, but the grace of God with me.

Not that we are adequate in ourselves to consider anything as if it were coming from ourselves, but our adequacy is from God,

Toward this goal I also labor, struggling according to his power that powerfully works in me.

Blessed be the LORD God of our fathers, who so moved in the heart of the king to so honor the temple of the LORD which is in Jerusalem!

Please remember me for good, O my God, for all that I have done for this people.

Genealogical records were kept for all Israel; they are recorded in the Scroll of the Kings of Israel. The people of Judah were carried away to Babylon because of their unfaithfulness.The first to resettle on their property and in their cities were some Israelites, priests, Levites, and temple servants.Some from the tribes of Judah, Benjamin, and Ephraim and Manasseh settled in Jerusalem.The settlers included: Uthai son of Ammihud, son of Omri, son of Imri, son of Bani, who was a descendant of Perez son of Judah.From the Shilonites: Asaiah the firstborn and his sons.From the descendants of Zerah: Jeuel. Their relatives numbered 690.From the descendants of Benjamin: Sallu son of Meshullam, son of Hodaviah, son of Hassenuah;Ibneiah son of Jeroham; Elah son of Uzzi, son of Mikri; and Meshullam son of Shephatiah, son of Reuel, son of Ibnijah.Their relatives, listed in their genealogical records, numbered 956. All these men were leaders of their families.

Do not be led astray, my dear brothers and sisters.

So then, my dear friends, just as you have always obeyed, not only in my presence but even more in my absence, continue working out your salvation with awe and reverence,for the one bringing forth in you both the desire and the effort– for the sake of his good pleasure– is God.
