律法教師和祭司長聽出這比喻是針對他們說的，便想立刻下手捉拿耶穌，但又害怕百姓。於是，他們密切地監視耶穌，又派遣密探假裝好人，想從祂的話裡找把柄抓祂去見總督。那些密探問耶穌：「老師，我們知道你所講所傳的道都是正確的，也知道你不看人的情面，只按真理傳上帝的道。

人人謊話連篇，花言巧語，口是心非。

怨恨人的用美言掩飾自己，心中卻藏著詭詐。縱然他甜言蜜語，你也不可信他，因為他心中充滿各種可憎之事。雖然他用詭計掩飾怨恨，他的邪惡必被會眾揭穿。

他們當中最好的不過是蒺藜，最正直的也不過是荊棘籬笆。你們的守望者所說的日子，就是你們受懲罰的日子已經來到。你們必驚慌失措。不要相信鄰居，不要信賴朋友，即使對你懷中的妻子也要守口如瓶。
