律法教师和祭司长听出这比喻是针对他们说的，便想立刻下手捉拿耶稣，但又害怕百姓。于是，他们密切地监视耶稣，又派遣密探假装好人，想从祂的话里找把柄抓祂去见总督。那些密探问耶稣：“老师，我们知道你所讲所传的道都是正确的，也知道你不看人的情面，只按真理传上帝的道。

人人谎话连篇，花言巧语，口是心非。

怨恨人的用美言掩饰自己，心中却藏着诡诈。纵然他甜言蜜语，你也不可信他，因为他心中充满各种可憎之事。虽然他用诡计掩饰怨恨，他的邪恶必被会众揭穿。

他们当中最好的不过是蒺藜，最正直的也不过是荆棘篱笆。你们的守望者所说的日子，就是你们受惩罚的日子已经来到。你们必惊慌失措。不要相信邻居，不要信赖朋友，即使对你怀中的妻子也要守口如瓶。
