Although we are of the same flesh and blood as our fellow Jews and though our children are as good as theirs, yet we have to subject our sons and daughters to slavery. Some of our daughters have already been enslaved, but we are powerless, because our fields and our vineyards belong to others.”

Now the wife of one of the sons of the prophets cried to Elisha,“ Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that your servant feared the Lord, but the creditor has come to take my two children to be his slaves.”

“ If your brother becomes poor beside you and sells himself to you, you shall not make him serve as a slave:he shall be with you as a hired worker and as a sojourner. He shall serve with you until the year of the jubilee.Then he shall go out from you, he and his children with him, and go back to his own clan and return to the possession of his fathers.For they are my servants, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt; they shall not be sold as slaves.You shall not rule over him ruthlessly but shall fear your God.

Is it not to share your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover him, and not to hide yourself from your own flesh?

Come, let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and let not our hand be upon him, for he is our brother, our own flesh.” And his brothers listened to him.

And his master shall bore his ear through with an awl, and he shall be his slave forever.“ When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she shall not go out as the male slaves do.If she does not please her master, who has designated her for himself, then he shall let her be redeemed. He shall have no right to sell her to a foreign people, since he has broken faith with her.If he designates her for his son, he shall deal with her as with a daughter.If he takes another wife to himself, he shall not diminish her food, her clothing, or her marital rights.And if he does not do these three things for her, she shall go out for nothing, without payment of money.

And since he could not pay, his master ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made.

Listen, my beloved brothers, has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to those who love him?But you have dishonored the poor man. Are not the rich the ones who oppress you, and the ones who drag you into court?
