有的說：「因為饑荒的緣故，我們要將田地、葡萄園和房屋作抵押來獲取糧食。」

有些人說：“我們抵押了自己的田地、葡萄園和房屋，為要在饑荒中買到五穀。”

有的說：『我們已典了我們的田地、葡萄園和房屋、去在這饑荒中取得五穀了。』

或曰、我質田畝、葡萄園、及第宅、因饑饉以得穀、

或曰、飢饉既甚、我已質田園宅第於人以糴穀。

或曰、我當質田畝、葡萄園、宅第、以糴榖充饑、

Others were saying,“ We are mortgaging our fields, our vineyards and our homes to get grain during the famine.”

Others were saying,“ We’re being forced to sell our fields, vineyards and homes. We have to do it to buy grain. There isn’t enough food for everyone.”

There were also those who said,“ We are mortgaging our fields, our vineyards, and our houses to get grain because of the famine.”

Others were saying,“ We are mortgaging our fields, vineyards, and homes to get grain during the famine.”

And there were others who said,“ We are mortgaging our fields, our vineyards, and our houses so that we might get grain because of the famine.”

Some also there were that said, We are mortgaging our fields, and our vineyards, and our houses: let us get grain, because of the dearth.

Others were saying,“ We are mortgaging our fields, vineyards, and homes to get grain during the famine.”

“ Will a man rob God? Yet you have robbed Me! But you say,‘ In what way have we robbed You?’ In tithes and offerings.You are cursed with a curse, For you have robbed Me, Even this whole nation.Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, That there may be food in My house, And try Me now in this,” Says the Lord of hosts,“ If I will not open for you the windows of heaven And pour out for you such blessing That there will not be room enough to receive it.“ And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, So that he will not destroy the fruit of your ground, Nor shall the vine fail to bear fruit for you in the field,” Says the Lord of hosts;

‘ If one of your brethren becomes poor, and falls into poverty among you, then you shall help him, like a stranger or a sojourner, that he may live with you.Take no usury or interest from him; but fear your God, that your brother may live with you.You shall not lend him your money for usury, nor lend him your food at a profit.I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, to give you the land of Canaan and to be your God.‘ And if one of your brethren who dwells by you becomes poor, and sells himself to you, you shall not compel him to serve as a slave.

So when the money failed in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came to Joseph and said,“ Give us bread, for why should we die in your presence? For the money has failed.”Then Joseph said,“ Give your livestock, and I will give you bread for your livestock, if the money is gone.”So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and Joseph gave them bread in exchange for the horses, the flocks, the cattle of the herds, and for the donkeys. Thus he fed them with bread in exchange for all their livestock that year.When that year had ended, they came to him the next year and said to him,“ We will not hide from my Lord that our money is gone; my Lord also has our herds of livestock. There is nothing left in the sight of my Lord but our bodies and our lands.Why should we die before your eyes, both we and our land? Buy us and our land for bread, and we and our land will be servants of Pharaoh; give us seed, that we may live and not die, that the land may not be desolate.”Then Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh; for every man of the Egyptians sold his field, because the famine was severe upon them. So the land became Pharaoh’s.And as for the people, he moved them into the cities, from one end of the borders of Egypt to the other end.Only the land of the priests he did not buy; for the priests had rations allotted to them by Pharaoh, and they ate their rations which Pharaoh gave them; therefore they did not sell their lands.Then Joseph said to the people,“ Indeed I have bought you and your land this day for Pharaoh. Look, here is seed for you, and you shall sow the land.And it shall come to pass in the harvest that you shall give one-fifth to Pharaoh. Four-fifths shall be your own, as seed for the field and for your food, for those of your households and as food for your little ones.”So they said,“ You have saved our lives; let us find favor in the sight of my Lord, and we will be Pharaoh’s servants.”

“ If there is among you a poor man of your brethren, within any of the gates in your land which the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart nor shut your hand from your poor brother,
