But the earlier governors— those preceding me— placed a heavy burden on the people and took forty shekels of silver from them in addition to food and wine. Their assistants also lorded it over the people. But out of reverence for God I did not act like that.

But there had been governors before me. They had put a heavy load on the people. They had taken a pound of silver from each of them. They had also taken food and wine from them. Their officials had acted like high and mighty rulers over them. But because of my great respect for God, I didn’t act like that.

The former governors who were before me laid heavy burdens on the people and took from them for their daily ration forty shekels of silver. Even their servants lorded it over the people. But I did not do so, because of the fear of God.

我继续说：“你们的所作所为实在不对。难道你们不应该敬畏上帝，以免我们的仇敌凌辱我们吗？

而是敬畏祂、仰望祂慈爱的人。

慈爱和忠信可让罪恶得赎，敬畏耶和华使人远离罪恶。

因为我惧怕上帝降灾祸，我无法承担祂的威严。

以上所说的，总而言之，就是要敬畏上帝，遵守祂的诫命，这是人的本分。因为人一切的行为，无论善恶，包括一切隐秘事，上帝都必审问。

我在你们那里经济拮据的时候，没有拖累过你们任何人，因为马其顿来的弟兄姊妹补足了我的缺乏。我没有在任何方面成为你们的负担，将来也不会成为你们的负担。

你们中间谁敬畏耶和华，听从祂仆人的话？行在黑暗中、没有光的人要信靠耶和华的名，仰赖自己的上帝。

如果你们只问候自己的弟兄，有什么特别呢？就是外族人也会这样做。

甚至在焚烧脂肪之前，祭司的仆人就来对献祭的人说：“把肉给祭司烤吧！他不要煮过的，只要生的。”如果献祭的人答道：“要先焚烧脂肪，之后你可以随便拿。”仆人便会说：“不，你现在就给我，不然我就要抢了。”在耶和华的眼中，这两个青年罪恶深重，因为他们轻视献给耶和华的祭物。

你们什么地方不及其他教会呢？我唯一“亏待”你们的地方就是没有成为你们的负担！希望各位原谅我的不公道！

君王若听谗言，臣仆必成奸徒。

你们要赞美耶和华！敬畏耶和华、乐于遵行祂命令的人有福了！
