Moreover, from the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, when I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, until his thirty-second year— twelve years— neither I nor my brothers ate the food allotted to the governor.

And that’s not all. I was appointed as governor of Judah in the 20th year that Artaxerxes was king of Persia. I remained in that position until his 32nd year. During those 12 years, I and my relatives didn’t eat the food that was provided for my table.

Moreover, from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year to the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes the king, twelve years, neither I nor my brothers ate the food allowance of the governor.

For the entire twelve years that I was governor of Judah— from the twentieth year to the thirty second year of the reign of King Artaxerxes— neither I nor my officials drew on our official food allowance.

Furthermore, from the day King Artaxerxes appointed me to be their governor in the land of Judah— from the twentieth year until his thirty-second year, twelve years— I and my associates never ate from the food allotted to the governor.

Furthermore, since the day that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year to the thirty second year of King Artaxerxes, for twelve years, neither I nor my kinsmen have eaten the governor’s food allowance.

Moreover, from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year until the thirty-second year of King Artaxerxes, twelve years, neither I nor my brothers ate the governor’s provisions.

Moreover from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year even unto the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that is, twelve years, I and my brethren have not eaten the bread of the governor.

From the day that I was appointed governor in the land of Judah, that is, from the twentieth year until the thirty-second year of King Artaxerxes– twelve years in all– neither I nor my relatives ate the food allotted to the governor.

這一切發生的時候，我不在耶路撒冷，因為我已在巴比倫王亞達薛西三十二年回到王那裡。過了一段日子，我向王請求離開。

也沒有白吃誰的飯，而是晝夜辛勤工作，免得成為你們任何人的負擔。我們並不是沒有權利接受供應，而是要給你們樹立學習的榜樣。

亞達薛西王二十年尼散月，酒呈到王面前後，我端起酒遞給王。在王面前，我一向沒有愁容。

難道我們沒有權利接受弟兄姊妹供應的飲食嗎？難道我們沒有權利像主的兄弟、彼得和其他使徒一樣，娶信主的姊妹為妻，一同出入嗎？難道只有我和巴拿巴要自食其力嗎？有誰當兵要自備糧餉呢？有誰栽種葡萄園，卻不吃園中出產的葡萄呢？有誰牧養牛羊，卻不喝牛羊的奶呢？我這樣說難道只是人的觀點嗎？律法不也是這樣說的嗎？摩西的律法書上說：「牛在踩穀時，不可籠住牠的嘴。」難道上帝關心的只是牛嗎？祂這樣說難道不是為了我們嗎？這話的確是為我們寫的，因為耕耘的和打穀的農夫都應該存著分享收成的盼望勞作。既然我們在你們中間撒下了屬靈的種子，難道就不能從你們那裡得到物質上的收穫嗎？如果別人有權要求你們供應他們，我們豈不更有權嗎？可是我們從來沒有用過這權利，反而凡事忍耐，免得妨礙了基督的福音。你們難道不知道，在聖殿裡事奉的人可以吃聖殿裡的食物，在祭壇前事奉的人可以分享祭壇上的祭物嗎？同樣，主也曾吩咐：傳福音的人理當藉著福音得到生活的供應。但是，我完全沒有使用這權利，如今我談這些事，並不是要你們這樣待我。因為我寧死也不要讓人抹摋我所誇耀的。

我能得到什麼獎賞呢？就是我可以把福音白白地傳給人，不使用自己因傳福音而應有的權利。

你們納稅也是為了同樣的緣故，因為官長是上帝的僕人，負責管理這類事務。凡是別人該得的，都要給他。該得米糧的，就納糧給他；該得稅款的，就繳稅給他；該懼怕的，就懼怕他；該尊敬的，就尊敬他。

王該知道，如果這城建好，城牆完工，他們將不再進貢、交賦、納稅，王的稅收必受虧損。我們既食王祿，就不能坐視王遭受損失，因此上奏於王。
