So Ezra stood up and demanded that the leaders of the priests and the Levites and all the people of Israel swear that they would do as Shecaniah had said. And they all swore a solemn oath.

This message came to Jeremiah from the Lord after King Zedekiah made a covenant with the people, proclaiming freedom for the slaves.He had ordered all the people to free their Hebrew slaves— both men and women. No one was to keep a fellow Judean in bondage.The officials and all the people had obeyed the king’s command,

Then the whole assembly raised their voices and answered,“ Yes, you are right; we must do as you say!”

“ We also promise that if the people of the land should bring any merchandise or grain to be sold on the Sabbath or on any other holy day, we will refuse to buy it. Every seventh year we will let our land rest, and we will cancel all debts owed to us.

So I confronted them and called down curses on them. I beat some of them and pulled out their hair. I made them swear in the name of God that they would not let their children intermarry with the pagan people of the land.

They agreed that anyone who refused to seek the Lord, the God of Israel, would be put to death— whether young or old, man or woman.They shouted out their oath of loyalty to the Lord with trumpets blaring and rams’ horns sounding.

They put those who were weak on donkeys and took all the prisoners back to their own people in Jericho, the city of palms. Then they returned to Samaria.

But Jesus remained silent. Then the high priest said to him,“ I demand in the name of the living God— tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.”

And the king went up to the Temple of the Lord with all the people of Judah and Jerusalem, along with the priests and the prophets— all the people from the least to the greatest. There the king read to them the entire Book of the Covenant that had been found in the Lord’s Temple.The king took his place of authority beside the pillar and renewed the covenant in the Lord’s presence. He pledged to obey the Lord by keeping all his commands, laws, and decrees with all his heart and soul. In this way, he confirmed all the terms of the covenant that were written in the scroll, and all the people pledged themselves to the covenant.
