Now when Sanballat, Tobiah, the Arabs, the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites heard that the repair of the walls of Jerusalem went on, and that the breaches began to be closed, they were very angry.

But when Sanballat, Tobiah, the Arabs, the Ammonites and the people of Ashdod heard that the repairs to Jerusalem’s walls had gone ahead and that the gaps were being closed, they were very angry.

But Sanballat and Tobiah heard that Jerusalem’s walls continued to be repaired. The Arabs, the Ammonites and the people of Ashdod heard about it too. They heard that the gaps in the wall were being filled in. So they were very angry.

But when Sanballat and Tobiah and the Arabs and the Ammonites and the Ashdodites heard that the repairing of the walls of Jerusalem was going forward and that the breaches were beginning to be closed, they were very angry.

But when Sanballat and Tobiah and the Arabs, Ammonites, and Ashdodites heard that the work was going ahead and that the gaps in the wall of Jerusalem were being repaired, they were furious.

When Sanballat, Tobiah, and the Arabs, Ammonites, and Ashdodites heard that the repair to the walls of Jerusalem was progressing and that the gaps were being closed, they became furious.

Now it happened, when Sanballat, Tobiah, the Arabs, the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites heard that the walls of Jerusalem were being restored and the gaps were beginning to be closed, that they became very angry,

But it came to pass that, when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and the Arabians, and the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, heard that the repairing of the walls of Jerusalem went forward, and that the breaches began to be stopped, then they were very wroth;

When Sanballat, Tobiah, and the Arabs, Ammonites, and Ashdodites heard that the repair to the walls of Jerusalem was progressing and that the gaps were being closed, they became furious.

But it came to pass,[ that] when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and the Arabians, and the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, heard that the walls of Jerusalem were made up,[ and] that the breaches began to be stopped, then they were very wroth,

( 4: 1) When Sanballat, Tobiah, the Arabs, the Ammonites, and the people of Ashdod heard that the restoration of the walls of Jerusalem had moved ahead and that the breaches had begun to be closed, they were very angry.

But when Sanballat, Tobiah, the Arabians, the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites heard that the repairing of the walls of Jerusalem went forward, and that the breaches began to be filled, they were very angry;

So the dragon was enraged with the woman, and went off to make war with the rest of her children, who keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus.

But so that it will not spread any further among the people, let’s warn them not to speak any longer to any person in this name.”And when they had summoned them, they commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.

And when Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the Ammonite official heard about it, it was very displeasing to them that someone had come to seek the welfare of the sons of Israel.

This is what the Lord says:“ For three offenses of the sons of Ammon, and for four, I will not revoke its punishment, Because they ripped open the pregnant women of Gilead In order to enlarge their borders.

Now it came about that when Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the wall, he became furious and very angry, and he mocked the Jews.

and to all the foreign people, all the kings of the land of Uz, all the kings of the land of the Philistines( that is, Ashkelon, Gaza, Ekron, and the remnant of Ashdod);

May it be known to the king that we have gone to the province of Judah, to the house of the great God which is being built with large stones, and beams are being laid in the walls; and this work is being performed with great care and is succeeding in their hands.

Ashkelon will see it and be afraid. Gaza too will writhe in great pain; Also Ekron, because her hope has been ruined. Moreover, the king will perish from Gaza, And Ashkelon will not be inhabited.And a people of mixed origins will live in Ashdod, And I will eliminate the pride of the Philistines.

But when Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the Ammonite official, and Geshem the Arab heard about it, they mocked us and despised us, and said,“ What is this thing that you are doing? Are you rebelling against the king?”

Now the Philistines took the ark of God and brought it from Ebenezer to Ashdod.Then the Philistines took the ark of God and brought it into the house of Dagon, and placed it beside Dagon.

For this reason, rejoice, you heavens and you who dwell in them. Woe to the earth and the sea, because the devil has come down to you with great wrath, knowing that he has only a short time.”And when the dragon saw that he was thrown down to the earth, he persecuted the woman who gave birth to the male Child.

And the anger of the Lord burned against Israel, and He sold them into the hands of the Philistines, and into the hands of the sons of Ammon.And they afflicted and oppressed the sons of Israel that year; for eighteen years they oppressed all the sons of Israel who were beyond the Jordan, in Gilead in the land of the Amorites.And the sons of Ammon crossed the Jordan to fight also against Judah, Benjamin, and the house of Ephraim, so that Israel was in great difficulty.Then the sons of Israel cried out to the Lord, saying,“ We have sinned against You, for indeed, we have abandoned our God and served the Baals.”And the Lord said to the sons of Israel,“ Did I not save you from the Egyptians, the Amorites, the sons of Ammon, and the Philistines?And when the Sidonians, the Amalekites, and the Maonites oppressed you, you cried out to Me, and I saved you from their hands.Yet you abandoned Me and served other gods; therefore I will no longer save you.Go and cry out to the gods which you have chosen; let them save you in the time of your distress.”Then the sons of Israel said to the Lord,“ We have sinned, do to us whatever seems good to You; only please save us this day.”So they removed the foreign gods from among them and served the Lord; and He could no longer endure the misery of Israel.Then the sons of Ammon were summoned, and they camped in Gilead. And the sons of Israel gathered together and camped in Mizpah.And the people, the leaders of Gilead, said to one another,“ Who is the man who will begin to fight against the sons of Ammon? He shall become head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.”

Then the people of the land discouraged the people of Judah, and frightened them from building,and bribed advisers against them to frustrate their advice all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.Now in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, they wrote an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.And in the days of Artaxerxes, Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of his colleagues wrote to Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the text of the letter was written in Aramaic and translated from Aramaic.Rehum the commander and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to King Artaxerxes, as follows—Rehum the commander, Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their colleagues, the judges and the lesser governors, the officials, the secretaries, the men of Erech, the Babylonians, the men of Susa, that is, the Elamites,and the rest of the nations which the great and honorable Osnappar deported and settled in the city of Samaria, and in the rest of the region beyond the Euphrates River. And nowthis is a copy of the letter which they sent to him:“ To King Artaxerxes: Your servants, the men of the region beyond the Euphrates River; and nowlet it be known to the king that the Jews who came up from you have come to us at Jerusalem; they are rebuilding the rebellious and evil city and are finishing the walls and repairing the foundations.Now let it be known to the king, that if that city is rebuilt and the walls are finished, they will not pay tribute, custom tax, or toll, and it will be detrimental to the revenue of the kings.Now because we are in the service of the palace, and it is not fitting for us to see the king’s shame, for this reason we have sent word and informed the king,so that a search may be conducted in the record books of your fathers. And you will discover in the record books and learn that that city is a rebellious city and detrimental to kings and provinces, and that they have revolted within it in past days; for this reason that city was laid waste.We are informing the king that if that city is rebuilt and the walls finished, then as a result of this you will have no possession in the province beyond the Euphrates River.”

And I will make enemies Of you and the woman, And of your offspring and her Descendant; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise Him on the heel.”

But Nahash the Ammonite said to them,“ I will make it with you on this condition, that I will gouge out the right eye of every one of you, and thereby I will inflict a disgrace on all Israel.”

Now he went out and fought against the Philistines, and broke down the wall of Gath, the wall of Jabneh, and the wall of Ashdod; and he built cities in the area of Ashdod and among the Philistines.God helped him against the Philistines, and against the Arabians who lived in Gur baal, and the Meunites.The Ammonites gave tribute to Uzziah, and his fame extended to the border of Egypt, for he became very strong.

Now it happened afterward that the king of the Ammonites died, and his son Hanun became king in his place.Then David said,“ I will show kindness to Hanun the son of Nahash, just as his father showed kindness to me.” So David sent some of his servants to console him about his father. But when David’s servants came to the land of the Ammonites,the commanders of the Ammonites said to their lord Hanun,“ Do you think that David is simply honoring your father since he has sent you servants to console you? Has David not sent his servants to you in order to explore the city, to spy it out and overthrow it?”So Hanun took David’s servants and shaved off half of their beards, and cut off their robes in the middle as far as their buttocks, and sent them away.When messengers informed David, he sent servants to meet them, because the men were extremely humiliated. And the king said,“ Stay in Jericho until your beards grow back, and then you shall return.”

In those days I also saw that the Jews had married women from Ashdod, Ammon, and Moab.As for their children, half spoke in the language of Ashdod, and none of them knew how to speak the language of Judah, but only the language of his own people.

Now it came about after this, that the sons of Moab and the sons of Ammon, together with some of the Meunites, came to make war against Jehoshaphat.

Proclaim on the citadels in Ashdod and on the citadels in the land of Egypt and say,“ Assemble yourselves on the mountains of Samaria and see the great panic within her and the oppressions in her midst.

So Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the sons of Ammon, saying,“ What conflict do you and I have, that you have come to me to fight against my land?”And the king of the sons of Ammon said to the messengers of Jephthah,“ It is because Israel took my land when they came up from Egypt, from the Arnon as far as the Jabbok and the Jordan; so return them peaceably now.”But Jephthah sent messengers once again to the king of the sons of Ammon,and they said to him,“ This is what Jephthah says:‘ Israel did not take the land of Moab nor the land of the sons of Ammon.For when they came up from Egypt, and Israel went through the wilderness to the Red Sea, and came to Kadesh,then Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying,“ Please let us pass through your land”; but the king of Edom would not listen. And they also sent messengers to the king of Moab, but he would not consent. So Israel remained at Kadesh.Then they went through the wilderness and around the land of Edom and the land of Moab, and came to the east side of the land of Moab, and they camped beyond the Arnon; but they did not enter the territory of Moab, for the Arnon was the border of Moab.And Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said to him,“ Please let us pass through your land to our place.”But Sihon did not trust Israel to pass through his territory; so Sihon gathered all his people and camped in Jahaz, and fought with Israel.And the Lord, the God of Israel, handed Sihon and all his people over to Israel, and they defeated them; so Israel took possession of all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country.So they possessed all the territory of the Amorites, from the Arnon as far as the Jabbok, and from the wilderness as far as the Jordan.And now the Lord, the God of Israel, has driven out the Amorites from His people Israel; so should you possess it?Do you not possess what Chemosh your god gives you to possess? So whatever the Lord our God has dispossessed before us, we will possess it.Now then, are you any better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever contend with Israel, or did he ever fight against them?While Israel was living in Heshbon and its villages, and in Aroer and its villages, and in all the cities that are on the banks of the Arnon, three hundred years, why did you not recover them within that time?So I have not sinned against you, but you are doing me wrong by making war against me. May the Lord, the Judge, judge today between the sons of Israel and the sons of Ammon.’ ”But the king of the sons of Ammon disregarded the message which Jephthah sent him.Now the Spirit of the Lord came upon Jephthah, and he passed through Gilead and Manasseh; then he passed through Mizpah of Gilead, and from Mizpah of Gilead he went on to the sons of Ammon.And Jephthah made a vow to the Lord and said,“ If You will indeed hand over to me the sons of Ammon,then whatever comes out the doors of my house to meet me when I return safely from the sons of Ammon, it shall be the Lord’s, and I will offer it up as a burnt offering.”So Jephthah crossed over to the sons of Ammon to fight against them; and the Lord handed them over to him.He inflicted a very great defeat on them from Aroer to the entrance of Minnith, twenty cities, and as far as Abel keramim. So the sons of Ammon were subdued before the sons of Israel.But Jephthah came to his house at Mizpah, and behold, his daughter was coming out to meet him with tambourines and with dancing. And she was his one and only child; besides her he had no son or daughter.So when he saw her, he tore his clothes and said,“ Oh, my daughter! You have brought me disaster, and you are among those who trouble me; for I have given my word to the Lord, and I cannot take it back.”So she said to him,“ My father, you have given your word to the Lord; do to me just as you have said, since the Lord has brought you vengeance on your enemies, the sons of Ammon.”And she said to her father,“ Let this thing be done for me; allow me two months, so that I may go to the mountains and weep because of my virginity, I and my friends.”Then he said,“ Go.” So he let her go for two months; and she left with her friends, and wept on the mountains because of her virginity.And at the end of two months she returned to her father, who did to her what he had vowed; and she had no relations with a man. And it became a custom in Israel,that the daughters of Israel went annually to commemorate the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite for four days in the year.

But when they heard this, they became infuriated and nearly decided to execute them.

I will also eliminate every inhabitant from Ashdod, As well as him who holds the scepter, from Ashkelon; And I will direct My power against Ekron, And the remnant of the Philistines will perish,” Says the Lord God.

and say to the sons of Ammon,‘ Hear the word of the Lord God! This is what the Lord God says:“ Because you said,‘ Aha!’ against My sanctuary when it was profaned, and against the land of Israel when it was made desolate, and against the house of Judah when they went into exile,therefore, behold, I am going to give you to the people of the east as a possession, and they will set up their encampments among you and make their dwellings among you; they will eat your fruit and drink your milk.I will make Rabbah a pasture for camels, and the sons of Ammon a resting place for flocks. Then you will know that I am the Lord.”For this is what the Lord God says:“ Because you have clapped your hands and stamped your feet, and have rejoiced with all the malice in your soul against the land of Israel,therefore, behold, I have reached out with My hand against you and I will give you as plunder to the nations. And I will cut you off from the peoples and eliminate you from the lands. I will exterminate you. So you will know that I am the Lord.”

And the Lord sent against him bands of Chaldeans, bands of Arameans, bands of Moabites, and bands of Ammonites. He sent them against Judah to destroy it, in accordance with the word of the Lord which He had spoken through His servants the prophets.
