有人告訴大衛說：『看哪，非利士人正在攻打基伊拉，搶掠着禾場呢。』大衛就求問永恆主說：『我去擊打這些非利士人、可以不可以？』永恆主對大衛說：『你可以擊打非利士人，拯救基伊拉。』跟從大衛的人對他說：『看哪，我們在猶大地這裏尚且懼怕，何況往基伊拉去攻打非利士人的陣營呢？』於是大衛又求問永恆主。永恆主回答說：『你只管起身、下基伊拉去；我必將非利士人交在你手裏。』大衛和跟從他的人就往基伊拉去、跟非利士人交戰，將他們的牲畜趕走，在他們中間大行擊殺；這樣、大衛就拯救了基伊拉的居民。亞希米勒的兒子亞比亞他逃到基伊拉去見大衛的時候，是手裏拿着「神諭像」下去的。有人告訴掃羅說：『大衛到了基伊拉了』；掃羅說：『他進了有門有閂的城，自己關閉在裏頭；這是上帝將他交付於我手了。』於是掃羅呼召眾民去赴戰、去下基伊拉、圍困大衛和跟從他的人。大衛知道掃羅設毒計要害他，就對祭司亞比亞他說：『將神諭像拿近前來。』大衛說：『永恆主以色列的上帝啊，你僕人確實聽見為了我的緣故掃羅要到基伊拉來毁壞這城。掃羅會不會照僕人所聽到的下來呢？永恆主以色列的上帝啊，求你告訴僕人。』永恆主說：『掃羅必下來。』大衛又說：『基伊拉公民會不會將我和跟從我的人送交掃羅手裏呢？』永恆主說：『會送交的。』大衛和跟從他的人、約六百名、就起身出了基伊拉，去了他們所能去的地方隨處往來。有人告訴掃羅說大衛從基伊拉逃跑了；掃羅便不出來了。
