But when Sanballat, Tobiah, and Geshem the Arab heard of our plan, they scoffed contemptuously.“ What are you doing? Are you rebelling against the king?” they asked.

But when Sanballat the Horonite, Tobiah the Ammonite official, and Geshem the Arab heard all this, they derided us and expressed contempt toward us. They said,“ What is this you are doing? Are you rebelling against the king?”

But when Sanballat the Horonite, Tobiah the Ammonite servant, and Geshem the Arabian, heard it, they ridiculed us, and despised us, and said,“ What is this thing that you are doing? Will you rebel against the king?”

In it was written: It is reported among the nations— and Geshem agrees— that you and the Jews plan to rebel. This is the reason you are building the wall. According to these reports, you are to become their king

You make us an object of reproach to our neighbors, a source of mockery and ridicule to those around us.You make us a joke among the nations, a laughingstock among the peoples.

They laughed at him, but he put them all outside. He took the child’s father, mother, and those who were with him, and entered the place where the child was.

When Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem the Arab, and the rest of our enemies heard that I had rebuilt the wall and that no gap was left in it— though at that time I had not installed the doors in the city gates—Sanballat and Geshem sent me a message:“ Come, let’s meet together in the villages of the Ono Valley.” They were planning to harm me.

They began to accuse him, saying,“ We found this man misleading our nation, opposing payment of taxes to Caesar, and saying that he himself is the Messiah, a king.”

that a search should be made in your predecessors’ record books. In these record books you will discover and verify that the city is a rebellious city, harmful to kings and provinces. There have been revolts in it since ancient times. That is why this city was destroyed.We advise the king that if this city is rebuilt and its walls are finished, you will not have any possession west of the Euphrates.

Others experienced mockings and scourgings, as well as bonds and imprisonment.

When Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the Ammonite official heard that someone had come to pursue the prosperity of the Israelites, they were greatly displeased.

From that moment Pilate kept trying to release him. But the Jews shouted,“ If you release this man, you are not Caesar’s friend. Anyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar!”

For they were all trying to intimidate us, saying,“ They will drop their hands from the work, and it will never be finished.” But now, my God, strengthen my hands.

When Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the wall, he became furious. He mocked the Jews

You put us at odds with our neighbors; our enemies mock us.

For whenever I speak, I cry out, I proclaim,“ Violence and destruction!” so the word of the LORD has become my constant disgrace and derision.

But now they mock me, men younger than I am, whose fathers I would have refused to put with my sheep dogs.

We have become an object of reproach to our neighbors, a source of mockery and ridicule to those around us.

For we have found this man to be a plague, an agitator among all the Jews throughout the Roman world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes.
