I said to them,“ You can see the trouble we’re in. Jerusalem has been destroyed. Fire has burned up its gates. Come on. Let’s rebuild the wall of Jerusalem. Then people won’t be ashamed anymore.”

以後我卻對他們說：『我們所遇見的患難，耶路撒冷怎樣荒廢，它的城門怎樣被火焚燒，你們都看見了：來吧！我們修造耶路撒冷的城牆吧！免得再受恥辱。』

今謂之曰、耶路撒冷荒蕪、其門被燬、處此苦境、爾所目擊、我儕其來、重築耶路撒冷、勿復受辱、

惟謂之曰、耶路撒冷、其地荒蕪、其門被燬、遭此蹂躪、爾所目擊、不如重築城垣、毋為人姍笑。

後、我謂之曰、耶路撒冷荒蕪、邑門被燬、我儕處斯苦境、爾所目睹、不如重建耶路撒冷城垣、免再受恥笑、

Then I said to them,“ You see the trouble we are in: Jerusalem lies in ruins, and its gates have been burned with fire. Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, and we will no longer be in disgrace.”

Then I said to them,“ You see the trouble we are in, how Jerusalem lies in ruins with its gates burned. Come, let us build the wall of Jerusalem, that we may no longer suffer derision.”

But now I said to them,“ You know very well what trouble we are in. Jerusalem lies in ruins, and its gates have been destroyed by fire. Let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem and end this disgrace!”

So I said to them,“ You see the trouble we are in. Jerusalem lies in ruins and its gates have been burned. Come, let’s rebuild Jerusalem’s wall, so that we will no longer be a disgrace.”

Then I said to them,“ You see the bad situation we are in, that Jerusalem is desolate and its gates have been burned by fire. Come, let’s rebuild the wall of Jerusalem so that we will no longer be a disgrace.”

Then I said to them,“ You see the distress that we are in, how Jerusalem lies waste, and its gates are burned with fire. Come and let us build the wall of Jerusalem, that we may no longer be a reproach.”

Then said I unto them, Ye see the evil case that we are in, how Jerusalem lieth waste, and the gates thereof are burned with fire: come, and let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we be no more a reproach.

So I said to them,“ You see the trouble we are in. Jerusalem lies in ruins and its gates have been burned down. Come, let’s rebuild Jerusalem’s wall, so that we will no longer be a disgrace.”

Then said I unto them, Ye see the distress that we[ are] in, how Jerusalem[ lieth] waste, and the gates thereof are burned with fire: come, and let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we be no more a reproach.

Then I said to them,“ You see the problem that we have: Jerusalem is desolate and its gates are burned. Come on! Let’s rebuild the wall of Jerusalem so that this reproach will not continue.”

Then I said to them,“ You see the bad situation that we are in, how Jerusalem lies waste, and its gates are burned with fire. Come, let’s build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we won’t be disgraced.”

“ I will destroy you. I will bring shame on you in the sight of the nations around you. All those who pass by will see it.

He and the men with him said to me,“ Some of the people who returned are still alive. They are back in the land of Judah. But they are having a hard time. They are ashamed. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down. Its gates have been burned with fire.”

We are something our neighbors joke about. The nations around us laugh at us and make fun of us.

You have made us become like trash and garbage among the nations.“ All our enemies have opened their mouths wide to swallow us up.

I will make all the kingdoms on earth displeased with them. In fact, they will hate them a great deal. They will shake their heads at them. They will curse them and make fun of them. All this will happen no matter where I force them to go.

What I see brings pain to my spirit. All the women of my city are mourning.

Lord, remember how my enemies have made fun of me. I’ve had to put up with mean words from all the nations.Lord, your enemies have said mean things. They have laughed at everything your anointed king has done.

Strengthen the hands of those who are weak. Help those whose knees give way.Say to those whose hearts are afraid,“ Be strong and do not fear. Your God will come. He will pay your enemies back. He will come to save you.”

Lord, our neighbors have laughed at you. Pay them back seven times for what they have done.

Without pity the Lord swallowed up all the homes of Jacob’s people. When he was angry, he tore down the forts of the people of Judah. He brought down their kingdom and princes to the ground in dishonor.

Nahash, the king of Ammon, replied,“ I will make a peace treaty with you. But I’ll do it only on one condition. You must let me put out the right eye of every one of you. I want to bring shame on the whole nation of Israel.”

Haggai and Zechariah, the prophets, prophesied to the Jews in Judah and Jerusalem. They spoke to them in the name of the God of Israel. God had spoken to those prophets. Zechariah belonged to the family line of Iddo.Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, began to work. So did Joshua, the son of Jozadak. They began to rebuild the house of God in Jerusalem. The prophets of God were right there with them. They were helping them.

The Lord decided to tear down the walls around the city of Zion. He measured out what he wanted to destroy. Then he destroyed Jerusalem by his power. He made even her towers and walls sing songs of sadness. All of them fell down.Her gates sank down into the ground. He broke the metal bars that locked her gates, and he destroyed them. Her king and princes were taken away to other nations. There is no law anymore. Jerusalem’s prophets no longer receive visions from the Lord.

Shekaniah spoke to Ezra. Shekaniah was the son of Jehiel. He belonged to the family line of Elam. Shekaniah said,“ We haven’t been faithful to our God. We’ve married women from the nations around us. In spite of that, there is still hope for Israel.So let’s make a covenant in front of our God. Let’s promise to send away all these women and their children. That’s what you have advised us to do. Those who respect our God’s commands have given us the same advice. We want to do what the Law says.Get up, Ezra. This matter is in your hands. Do what you need to. We will be behind you all the way. Be brave and do it.”

You have made us something that our neighbors laugh at. Those who live around us make fun of us and tease us.

You are guilty of spilling blood. Your statues have made you‘ unclean.’ You have brought your days to a close. The end of your years has come. So the nations will make fun of you. All the countries will laugh at you.Those who are near you will tell jokes about you. So will those who are far away. Trouble fills the streets of your sinful city.
