This is what the Lord said to me:“ Go and stand in the gates of Jerusalem, first in the gate where the king goes in and out, and then in each of the other gates.Say to all the people,‘ Listen to this message from the Lord, you kings of Judah and all you people of Judah and everyone living in Jerusalem.This is what the Lord says: Listen to my warning! Stop carrying on your trade at Jerusalem’s gates on the Sabbath day.Do not do your work on the Sabbath, but make it a holy day. I gave this command to your ancestors,

“ When you harvest the crops of your land, do not harvest the grain along the edges of your fields, and do not pick up what the harvesters drop. Leave it for the poor and the foreigners living among you. I am the Lord your God.”

You must keep the Sabbath day, for it is a holy day for you. Anyone who desecrates it must be put to death; anyone who works on that day will be cut off from the community.You have six days each week for your ordinary work, but the seventh day must be a Sabbath day of complete rest, a holy day dedicated to the Lord. Anyone who works on the Sabbath must be put to death.The people of Israel must keep the Sabbath day by observing it from generation to generation. This is a covenant obligation for all time.It is a permanent sign of my covenant with the people of Israel. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, but on the seventh day he stopped working and was refreshed.’”

I said to them,“ Do not leave the gates open during the hottest part of the day. And even while the gatekeepers are on duty, have them shut and bar the doors. Appoint the residents of Jerusalem to act as guards, everyone on a regular watch. Some will serve at sentry posts and some in front of their own homes.”
