When I heard these things, I sat down and wept. For some days I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven.

報信的人回答說：「以色列人在非利士人面前逃跑，而且民中遭受了極大的殺戮，你的兩個兒子何弗尼和非尼哈也死了，神的約櫃被奪去了。」他一提到神的約櫃，以利就從座位上向後仰倒在城門邊，由於人老體重，脖子折斷而死。以利作以色列的士師四十年。當時以利的兒媳婦，非尼哈的妻子懷孕臨產，她一聽到消息說神的約櫃被奪去、她的公公和丈夫也死了，就被陣痛擊潰，屈身生產。她臨死的時候，身邊侍候的婦女們說：「不要擔心，你生了一個兒子！」她卻沒有回應，也不理會。她給孩子起名為以迦博，說：「榮耀離開了以色列。」這是指著神的約櫃被奪去以及她公公和丈夫的事說的。她說：「榮耀離開了以色列，因為神的約櫃被奪去了。」

約拿對他們說：「我是希伯來人；我敬畏耶和華天上的神；他就是造了海和陸地的那一位。」

讓他們在這奧祕的事上，向天上的神祈求憐憫，免得但以理和他的同伴與巴比倫其餘的智慧人一同滅亡。
