When I heard these things, I sat down and wept. For some days I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven.

要與喜樂的人一同喜樂，與哀哭的人一同哀哭。

你要起來，憐憫錫安，因為現在是恩待錫安的時候；所定的日期已經到了。因為你的眾僕人喜愛它的石頭，愛惜它的塵土。

報信的人回答，說：“以色列人在非利士人面前逃跑，傷亡慘重，你兩個兒子何弗尼和非尼哈也都死了，民中被殺的甚多，神的約櫃也被搶去了。”因為以利年老體重，報信的人一提到神的約櫃，以利就從椅子上往後跌倒在門旁，頸骨折斷而死。以利治理了以色列四十年。以利的媳婦，非尼哈的妻子懷了孕，產期近了；她一聽見神的約櫃被搶去，以及她公公和丈夫都死了的消息，就忽然感到疼痛，曲身生產了。她快要死的時候，站在旁邊的婦女們對她說：“不要怕，你生了一個兒子！”她卻不回答，也不理會。她給孩子起名叫以迦博，說：“榮耀已經離開以色列了。”這是因為神的約櫃被搶去，又因為她的公公和丈夫都死了。她說：“榮耀已經離開了以色列，因為神的約櫃被搶去了。”

“那些屬你，為了切慕大會而憂愁的人，他們擔當了羞辱；我必招聚他們。

他回答說：“我是希伯來人，我敬畏耶和華天上的神，就是那創造海洋和陸地的。”

要他們為這隱祕的事祈求天上的神憐憫，免得但以理和他的同伴與巴比倫其餘的智慧人一同滅亡。

他們這樣答覆我們，說：‘我們是天地之神的僕人，正在重建這多年以前已經建好的殿，就是一位以色列偉大的君王所建成的。但因為我們的祖先激怒了天上的神，神就把他們交在迦勒底人巴比倫王尼布甲尼撒的手中；尼布甲尼撒就拆毀這殿，把人民擄到巴比倫去。

我一聽見這事，就撕裂我的衣服和外袍，拔掉頭上的頭髮和鬍鬚，驚懼地坐著。
