爾傷莫能減之、爾創甚劇、凡聞爾之音耗者、必向爾鼓掌、蓋爾之兇惡、誰未屢受之耶、

所受之傷、不得醫痊、凡聞斯音、必鼓其掌、蓋爾之暴虐、遐邇咸知焉。

爾所受之傷、無藥可治、所受之損、終必致死、凡聞爾音信者、必因爾鼓掌、蓋爾之兇惡、兇惡或作暴虐誰未受之、

Nothing can heal your wounds. You will die of them. All those who hear the news about you clap their hands. That’s because you have fallen from power. Is there anyone who has not suffered because of how badly you treated them?

It claps its hands in derision and hisses him out of his place.”

“ It is true, Lord, that the Assyrian kings have laid waste all these peoples and their lands.

“ Go up to Gilead and get balm, Virgin Daughter Egypt. But you try many medicines in vain; there is no healing for you.

Even the junipers and the cedars of Lebanon gloat over you and say,“ Now that you have been laid low, no one comes to cut us down.”The realm of the dead below is all astir to meet you at your coming; it rouses the spirits of the departed to greet you— all those who were leaders in the world; it makes them rise from their thrones— all those who were kings over the nations.They will all respond, they will say to you,“ You also have become weak, as we are; you have become like us.”All your pomp has been brought down to the grave, along with the noise of your harps; maggots are spread out beneath you and worms cover you.How you have fallen from heaven, morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations!You said in your heart,“ I will ascend to the heavens; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of Mount Zaphon.I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.”But you are brought down to the realm of the dead, to the depths of the pit.Those who see you stare at you, they ponder your fate:“ Is this the man who shook the earth and made kingdoms tremble,the man who made the world a wilderness, who overthrew its cities and would not let his captives go home?”All the kings of the nations lie in state, each in his own tomb.But you are cast out of your tomb like a rejected branch; you are covered with the slain, with those pierced by the sword, those who descend to the stones of the pit. Like a corpse trampled underfoot,you will not join them in burial, for you have destroyed your land and killed your people. Let the offspring of the wicked never be mentioned again.Prepare a place to slaughter his children for the sins of their ancestors; they are not to rise to inherit the land and cover the earth with their cities.

I removed the boundaries of nations, I plundered their treasures; like a mighty one I subdued their kings.As one reaches into a nest, so my hand reached for the wealth of the nations; as people gather abandoned eggs, so I gathered all the countries; not one flapped a wing, or opened its mouth to chirp.’”

He will stretch out his hand against the north and destroy Assyria, leaving Nineveh utterly desolate and dry as the desert.Flocks and herds will lie down there, creatures of every kind. The desert owl and the screech owl will roost on her columns. Their hooting will echo through the windows, rubble will fill the doorways, the beams of cedar will be exposed.This is the city of revelry that lived in safety. She said to herself,“ I am the one! And there is none besides me.” What a ruin she has become, a lair for wild beasts! All who pass by her scoff and shake their fists.

“ Son of man, I have broken the arm of Pharaoh king of Egypt. It has not been bound up to be healed or put in a splint so that it may become strong enough to hold a sword.Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against Pharaoh king of Egypt. I will break both his arms, the good arm as well as the broken one, and make the sword fall from his hand.

“ Rejoice over her, you heavens! Rejoice, you people of God! Rejoice, apostles and prophets! For God has judged her with the judgment she imposed on you.”

It was given power to wage war against God’s holy people and to conquer them. And it was given authority over every tribe, people, language and nation.

With a mighty voice he shouted:“‘ Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great!’ She has become a dwelling for demons and a haunt for every impure spirit, a haunt for every unclean bird, a haunt for every unclean and detestable animal.For all the nations have drunk the maddening wine of her adulteries. The kings of the earth committed adultery with her, and the merchants of the earth grew rich from her excessive luxuries.”

Listen! The report is coming— a great commotion from the land of the north! It will make the towns of Judah desolate, a haunt of jackals.

For this is what the Sovereign Lord says: Because you have clapped your hands and stamped your feet, rejoicing with all the malice of your heart against the land of Israel,

Where now is the lions’ den, the place where they fed their young, where the lion and lioness went, and the cubs, with nothing to fear?The lion killed enough for his cubs and strangled the prey for his mate, filling his lairs with the kill and his dens with the prey.
