you lay out the rafters of your home in the rain clouds. You make the clouds your chariot; you ride upon the wings of the wind.

The Lord passed in front of Moses, calling out,“ Yahweh! The Lord! The God of compassion and mercy! I am slow to anger and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness.I lavish unfailing love to a thousand generations. I forgive iniquity, rebellion, and sin. But I do not excuse the guilty. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children and grandchildren; the entire family is affected— even children in the third and fourth generations.”

Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry.

They refused to obey and did not remember the miracles you had done for them. Instead, they became stubborn and appointed a leader to take them back to their slavery in Egypt. But you are a God of forgiveness, gracious and merciful, slow to become angry, and rich in unfailing love. You did not abandon them,

Dark clouds surround him. Righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.Fire spreads ahead of him and burns up all his foes.His lightning flashes out across the world. The earth sees and trembles.The mountains melt like wax before the Lord, before the Lord of all the earth.

‘ The Lord is slow to anger and filled with unfailing love, forgiving every kind of sin and rebellion. But he does not excuse the guilty. He lays the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected— even children in the third and fourth generations.’

See, the Lord is coming with fire, and his swift chariots roar like a whirlwind. He will bring punishment with the fury of his anger and the flaming fire of his hot rebuke.

The Lord will appear above his people; his arrows will fly like lightning! The Sovereign Lord will sound the ram’s horn and attack like a whirlwind from the southern desert.

This message came to me concerning Egypt: Look! The Lord is advancing against Egypt, riding on a swift cloud. The idols of Egypt tremble. The hearts of the Egyptians melt with fear.

“ Go out and stand before me on the mountain,” the Lord told him. And as Elijah stood there, the Lord passed by, and a mighty windstorm hit the mountain. It was such a terrible blast that the rocks were torn loose, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake.And after the earthquake there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper.When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. And a voice said,“ What are you doing here, Elijah?”

Jesus replied,“ You have said it. And in the future you will see the Son of Man seated in the place of power at God’s right hand and coming on the clouds of heaven.”

On the morning of the third day, thunder roared and lightning flashed, and a dense cloud came down on the mountain. There was a long, loud blast from a ram’s horn, and all the people trembled.Moses led them out from the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain.All of Mount Sinai was covered with smoke because the Lord had descended on it in the form of fire. The smoke billowed into the sky like smoke from a brick kiln, and the whole mountain shook violently.

God has spoken plainly, and I have heard it many times: Power, O God, belongs to you;

Then the earth quaked and trembled. The foundations of the mountains shook; they quaked because of his anger.Smoke poured from his nostrils; fierce flames leaped from his mouth. Glowing coals blazed forth from him.He opened the heavens and came down; dark storm clouds were beneath his feet.Mounted on a mighty angelic being, he flew, soaring on the wings of the wind.He shrouded himself in darkness, veiling his approach with dark rain clouds.Thick clouds shielded the brightness around him and rained down hail and burning coals.The Lord thundered from heaven; the voice of the Most High resounded amid the hail and burning coals.He shot his arrows and scattered his enemies; great bolts of lightning flashed, and they were confused.Then at your command, O Lord, at the blast of your breath, the bottom of the sea could be seen, and the foundations of the earth were laid bare.

Say to God,“ How awesome are your deeds! Your enemies cringe before your mighty power.

Our God approaches, and he is not silent. Fire devours everything in his way, and a great storm rages around him.

I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe him. This is the same mighty powerthat raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honor at God’s right hand in the heavenly realms.

“ The Lord spoke these words to all of you assembled there at the foot of the mountain. He spoke with a loud voice from the heart of the fire, surrounded by clouds and deep darkness. This was all he said at that time, and he wrote his words on two stone tablets and gave them to me.“ But when you heard the voice from the heart of the darkness, while the mountain was blazing with fire, all your tribal leaders and elders came to me.They said,‘ Look, the Lord our God has shown us his glory and greatness, and we have heard his voice from the heart of the fire. Today we have seen that God can speak to us humans, and yet we live!

So he complained to the Lord about it:“ Didn’t I say before I left home that you would do this, Lord? That is why I ran away to Tarshish! I knew that you are a merciful and compassionate God, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. You are eager to turn back from destroying people.

As my vision continued that night, I saw someone like a son of man coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient One and was led into his presence.

Look! He comes with the clouds of heaven. And everyone will see him— even those who pierced him. And all the nations of the world will mourn for him. Yes! Amen!

Then the Lord answered Job from the whirlwind:

was to watch me, and if I sinned, you would not forgive my guilt.

Pestilence marches before him; plague follows close behind.When he stops, the earth shakes. When he looks, the nations tremble. He shatters the everlasting mountains and levels the eternal hills. He is the Eternal One!I see the people of Cushan in distress, and the nation of Midian trembling in terror.Was it in anger, Lord, that you struck the rivers and parted the sea? Were you displeased with them? No, you were sending your chariots of salvation!You brandished your bow and your quiver of arrows. You split open the earth with flowing rivers.The mountains watched and trembled. Onward swept the raging waters. The mighty deep cried out, lifting its hands in submission.The sun and moon stood still in the sky as your brilliant arrows flew and your glittering spear flashed.You marched across the land in anger and trampled the nations in your fury.You went out to rescue your chosen people, to save your anointed ones. You crushed the heads of the wicked and stripped their bones from head to toe.With his own weapons, you destroyed the chief of those who rushed out like a whirlwind, thinking Israel would be easy prey.You trampled the sea with your horses, and the mighty waters piled high.

Don’t tear your clothing in your grief, but tear your hearts instead.” Return to the Lord your God, for he is merciful and compassionate, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. He is eager to relent and not punish.
