Sitting down, he called the Twelve and said to them,“ If anyone wants to be first, he must be last and servant of all.”

Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said,“ Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.”

Jesus sat down and called for the 12 disciples to come to him. Then he said,“ Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last. They must be the servant of everyone.”

And he sat down and called the twelve. And he said to them,“ If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.”

Jesus called them over and said to them,“ You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those in high positions act as tyrants over them.But it is not so among you. On the contrary, whoever wants to become great among you will be your servant,and whoever wants to be first among you will be a slave to all.For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Jesus called them over and said,“ You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those in high positions act as tyrants over them.It must not be like that among you. On the contrary, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,and whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave;just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

“ But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that when the one who invited you comes, he will say to you,‘ Friend, move up higher.’ You will then be honored in the presence of all the other guests.For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

But he gives greater grace. Therefore he says: God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble.

It is not to be like that among you. On the contrary, whoever is greatest among you should become like the youngest, and whoever leads, like the one serving.

The greatest among you will be your servant.

I tell you, this one went down to his house justified rather than the other, because everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Arrogance leads to nothing but strife, but wisdom is gained by those who take advice.

But as for you, do you pursue great things for yourself? Stop pursuing! For I am about to bring disaster on all humanity”— this is the LORD’s declaration—“ but I will grant you your life like the spoils of war wherever you go.”’”
