這是因為耶穌吩咐汙靈從那個人身上出來。原來汙靈曾多次抓住那個人，雖然他被鐵鏈和腳鐐捆鎖，被看守著，可是他掙斷鎖鏈，被鬼魔驅逐到曠野去。

你們屬於你們的父——魔鬼，並且想要隨你們父的欲望去做。他從起初就是殺人的，不站在真理之中，因為他裡面沒有真理。他說虛假之事是出於自己的本性，因為他本來就是個說謊者，並且是說謊者之父。

那孩子上前來的時候，鬼魔把他摔倒，使他劇烈地抽瘋。耶穌就斥責那汙靈，使孩子痊癒，把孩子交給他父親。

無論在哪裡，只要邪靈抓住他，把他摔倒在地，他就口吐白沫，緊咬牙關，全身僵硬。我告訴你的門徒們，要他們驅趕那邪靈，可是他們不能。」

你們要謹慎，要警醒。你們的仇敵魔鬼就像咆哮的獅子走來走去，尋找可吞吃的人。
