And he answered and told them, Elias verily cometh first, and restoreth all things; and how it is written of the Son of man, that he must suffer many things, and be set at nought.

曰、以利亞先至、振興諸事、而人子必備受害、為人所忽、記已言之、

耶穌謂之曰、以利亞必先至、振興諸事、而經指人子何所載、蓋載人子必多受苦、為人所侮、

答曰：『伊理靄固需先來振興萬事、然經不亦言人子應如何備嘗苦辱乎？

Jesus replied,“ To be sure, Elijah does come first, and restores all things. Why then is it written that the Son of Man must suffer much and be rejected?

Jesus replied,“ That’s right. Elijah does come first. He makes all things new again. So why is it written that the Son of Man must suffer much and not be accepted?

And he said to them,“ Elijah does come first to restore all things. And how is it written of the Son of Man that he should suffer many things and be treated with contempt?

Jesus responded,“ Elijah is indeed coming first to get everything ready. Yet why do the Scriptures say that the Son of Man must suffer greatly and be treated with utter contempt?

“ Elijah does come first and restores all things,” he replied.“ Why then is it written that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be treated with contempt?

And He said to them,“ Elijah does come first and he restores all things. And yet how is it written of the Son of Man that He will suffer many things and be treated with contempt?

Then He answered and told them,“ Indeed, Elijah is coming first and restores all things. And how is it written concerning the Son of Man, that He must suffer many things and be treated with contempt?

Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed?For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him,[ there is] no beauty that we should desire him.He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were[ our] faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.But he[ was] wounded for our transgressions,[ he was] bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace[ was] upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither[ was any] deceit in his mouth.Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put[ him] to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see[ his] seed, he shall prolong[ his] days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.He shall see of the travail of his soul,[ and] shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.Therefore will I divide him[ a portion] with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting.

And Herod with his men of war set him at nought, and mocked[ him], and arrayed him in a gorgeous robe, and sent him again to Pilate.

Thus saith the LORD, the Redeemer of Israel,[ and] his Holy One, to him whom man despiseth, to him whom the nation abhorreth, to a servant of rulers, Kings shall see and arise, princes also shall worship, because of the LORD that is faithful,[ and] the Holy One of Israel, and he shall choose thee.

As many were astonied at thee; his visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men:

And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man[ that is] my fellow, saith the LORD of hosts: smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered: and I will turn mine hand upon the little ones.

Save me, O God; for the waters are come in unto[ my] soul.I sink in deep mire, where[ there is] no standing: I am come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me.I am weary of my crying: my throat is dried: mine eyes fail while I wait for my God.They that hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of mine head: they that would destroy me,[ being] mine enemies wrongfully, are mighty: then I restored[ that] which I took not away.O God, thou knowest my foolishness; and my sins are not hid from thee.Let not them that wait on thee, O Lord GOD of hosts, be ashamed for my sake: let not those that seek thee be confounded for my sake, O God of Israel.Because for thy sake I have borne reproach; shame hath covered my face.I am become a stranger unto my brethren, and an alien unto my mother’s children.For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me.When I wept,[ and chastened] my soul with fasting, that was to my reproach.I made sackcloth also my garment; and I became a proverb to them.They that sit in the gate speak against me; and I[ was] the song of the drunkards.But as for me, my prayer[ is] unto thee, O LORD,[ in] an acceptable time: O God, in the multitude of thy mercy hear me, in the truth of thy salvation.Deliver me out of the mire, and let me not sink: let me be delivered from them that hate me, and out of the deep waters.Let not the waterflood overflow me, neither let the deep swallow me up, and let not the pit shut her mouth upon me.Hear me, O LORD; for thy lovingkindness[ is] good: turn unto me according to the multitude of thy tender mercies.And hide not thy face from thy servant; for I am in trouble: hear me speedily.Draw nigh unto my soul,[ and] redeem it: deliver me because of mine enemies.Thou hast known my reproach, and my shame, and my dishonour: mine adversaries[ are] all before thee.Reproach hath broken my heart; and I am full of heaviness: and I looked[ for some] to take pity, but[ there was] none; and for comforters, but I found none.They gave me also gall for my meat; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.Let their table become a snare before them: and[ that which should have been] for[ their] welfare,[ let it become] a trap.Let their eyes be darkened, that they see not; and make their loins continually to shake.Pour out thine indignation upon them, and let thy wrathful anger take hold of them.Let their habitation be desolate;[ and] let none dwell in their tents.For they persecute[ him] whom thou hast smitten; and they talk to the grief of those whom thou hast wounded.Add iniquity unto their iniquity: and let them not come into thy righteousness.Let them be blotted out of the book of the living, and not be written with the righteous.But I[ am] poor and sorrowful: let thy salvation, O God, set me up on high.I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving.[ This] also shall please the LORD better than an ox[ or] bullock that hath horns and hoofs.The humble shall see[ this, and] be glad: and your heart shall live that seek God.For the LORD heareth the poor, and despiseth not his prisoners.Let the heaven and earth praise him, the seas, and every thing that moveth therein.For God will save Zion, and will build the cities of Judah: that they may dwell there, and have it in possession.The seed also of his servants shall inherit it: and they that love his name shall dwell therein.

And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.

The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain:And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see[ it] together: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken[ it].

In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.And the same John had his raiment of camel’s hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey.Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan,And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to[ our] father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and[ with] fire:Whose fan[ is] in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.

My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?[ why art thou so] far from helping me,[ and from] the words of my roaring?O my God, I cry in the daytime, but thou hearest not; and in the night season, and am not silent.But thou[ art] holy,[ O thou] that inhabitest the praises of Israel.Our fathers trusted in thee: they trusted, and thou didst deliver them.They cried unto thee, and were delivered: they trusted in thee, and were not confounded.But I[ am] a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people.All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head,[ saying],He trusted on the LORD[ that] he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him.But thou[ art] he that took me out of the womb: thou didst make me hope[ when I was] upon my mother’s breasts.I was cast upon thee from the womb: thou[ art] my God from my mother’s belly.Be not far from me; for trouble[ is] near; for[ there is] none to help.Many bulls have compassed me: strong[ bulls] of Bashan have beset me round.They gaped upon me[ with] their mouths,[ as] a ravening and a roaring lion.I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels.My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death.For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet.I may tell all my bones: they look[ and] stare upon me.They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.But be not thou far from me, O LORD: O my strength, haste thee to help me.Deliver my soul from the sword; my darling from the power of the dog.Save me from the lion’s mouth: for thou hast heard me from the horns of the unicorns.I will declare thy name unto my brethren: in the midst of the congregation will I praise thee.Ye that fear the LORD, praise him; all ye the seed of Jacob, glorify him; and fear him, all ye the seed of Israel.For he hath not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; neither hath he hid his face from him; but when he cried unto him, he heard.My praise[ shall be] of thee in the great congregation: I will pay my vows before them that fear him.The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the LORD that seek him: your heart shall live for ever.All the ends of the world shall remember and turn unto the LORD: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee.For the kingdom[ is] the LORD’S: and he[ is] the governor among the nations.All[ they that be] fat upon earth shall eat and worship: all they that go down to the dust shall bow before him: and none can keep alive his own soul.A seed shall serve him; it shall be accounted to the Lord for a generation.They shall come, and shall declare his righteousness unto a people that shall be born, that he hath done[ this].

The Son of man goeth as it is written of him: but woe unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! it had been good for that man if he had not been born.

And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;

Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.Know therefore and understand,[ that] from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince[ shall be] seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof[ shall be] with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.

But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us.

As it is written in the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.And there went out unto him all the land of Judaea, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins.And John was clothed with camel’s hair, and with a girdle of a skin about his loins; and he did eat locusts and wild honey;And preached, saying, There cometh one mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose.I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.

From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day.

There was a man sent from God, whose name[ was] John.The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all[ men] through him might believe.He was not that Light, but[ was sent] to bear witness of that Light.[ That] was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.He came unto his own, and his own received him not.But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God,[ even] to them that believe on his name:Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us,( and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.For the law was given by Moses,[ but] grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared[ him].And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou?And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ.And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No.Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?He said, I[ am] the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias.And they which were sent were of the Pharisees.And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet?John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not;He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe’s latchet I am not worthy to unloose.These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing.The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me.And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples;And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!

Arise, O God, plead thine own cause: remember how the foolish man reproacheth thee daily.

Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples,And said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see:The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.And blessed is[ he], whosoever shall not be offended in me.And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind?But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft[ clothing] are in kings’ houses.But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet.For this is[ he], of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.And if ye will receive[ it], this is Elias, which was for to come.He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.But whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like unto children sitting in the markets, and calling unto their fellows,And saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented.For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a devil.

Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways[ shall be] made smooth;And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.

John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven.Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him.He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled.He must increase, but I[ must] decrease.

And the LORD said unto me, Cast it unto the potter: a goodly price that I was prised at of them. And I took the thirty[ pieces] of silver, and cast them to the potter in the house of the LORD.
