And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul?

I once thought these things were valuable, but now I consider them worthless because of what Christ has done.Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christand become one with him. I no longer count on my own righteousness through obeying the law; rather, I become righteous through faith in Christ. For God’s way of making us right with himself depends on faith.

Believers who are poor have something to boast about, for God has honored them.And those who are rich should boast that God has humbled them. They will fade away like a little flower in the field.The hot sun rises and the grass withers; the little flower droops and falls, and its beauty fades away. In the same way, the rich will fade away with all of their achievements.

And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but are yourself lost or destroyed?

And what was the result? You are now ashamed of the things you used to do, things that end in eternal doom.

For when they die, they take nothing with them. Their wealth will not follow them into the grave.

“ Can a person do anything to help God? Can even a wise person be helpful to him?

And I’ll sit back and say to myself,“ My friend, you have enough stored away for years to come. Now take it easy! Eat, drink, and be merry!”’“ But God said to him,‘ You fool! You will die this very night. Then who will get everything you worked for?’

Satan replied to the Lord,“ Skin for skin! A man will give up everything he has to save his life.

She glorified herself and lived in luxury, so match it now with torment and sorrow. She boasted in her heart,‘ I am queen on my throne. I am no helpless widow, and I have no reason to mourn.’Therefore, these plagues will overtake her in a single day— death and mourning and famine. She will be completely consumed by fire, for the Lord God who judges her is mighty.”

“ You have said,‘ What’s the use of serving God? What have we gained by obeying his commands or by trying to show the Lord of Heaven’s Armies that we are sorry for our sins?

Jesus said,“ There was a certain rich man who was splendidly clothed in purple and fine linen and who lived each day in luxury.At his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus who was covered with sores.As Lazarus lay there longing for scraps from the rich man’s table, the dogs would come and lick his open sores.“ Finally, the poor man died and was carried by the angels to sit beside Abraham at the heavenly banquet. The rich man also died and was buried,and he went to the place of the dead. There, in torment, he saw Abraham in the far distance with Lazarus at his side.

Truly, you put them on a slippery path and send them sliding over the cliff to destruction.In an instant they are destroyed, completely swept away by terrors.When you arise, O Lord, you will laugh at their silly ideas as a person laughs at dreams in the morning.

It was by faith that Moses, when he grew up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter.He chose to share the oppression of God’s people instead of enjoying the fleeting pleasures of sin.He thought it was better to suffer for the sake of Christ than to own the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking ahead to his great reward.

Next the devil took him to the peak of a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.“ I will give it all to you,” he said,“ if you will kneel down and worship me.”“ Get out of here, Satan,” Jesus told him.“ For the Scriptures say,‘ You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him.’”
