But everything that was a gain to me, I have considered to be a loss because of Christ.More than that, I also consider everything to be a loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. Because of Him I have suffered the loss of all things and consider them filth, so that I may gain Christand be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own from the law, but one that is through faith in Christ— the righteousness from God based on faith.

The brother of humble circumstances should boast in his exaltation,but the one who is rich should boast in his humiliation because he will pass away like a flower of the field.For the sun rises with its scorching heat and dries up the grass; its flower falls off, and its beautiful appearance is destroyed. In the same way, the rich man will wither away while pursuing his activities.

What is a man benefited if he gains the whole world, yet loses or forfeits himself?

So what fruit was produced then from the things you are now ashamed of? For the end of those things is death.

For when he dies, he will take nothing at all; his wealth will not follow him down.

Can a man be of any use to God? Can even a wise man be of use to Him?

Then I’ll say to myself,“ You have many goods stored up for many years. Take it easy; eat, drink, and enjoy yourself.”’“ But God said to him,‘ You fool! This very night your life is demanded of you. And the things you have prepared— whose will they be?’

“ Skin for skin!” Satan answered the Lord.“ A man will give up everything he owns in exchange for his life.

As much as she glorified herself and lived luxuriously, give her that much torment and grief, for she says in her heart,“ I sit as a queen; I am not a widow, and I will never see grief.”For this reason her plagues will come in one day— death and grief and famine. She will be burned up with fire, because the Lord God who judges her is mighty.

You have said:“ It is useless to serve God. What have we gained by keeping His requirements and walking mournfully before the Lord of Hosts?

“ There was a rich man who would dress in purple and fine linen, feasting lavishly every day.But a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, was left at his gate.He longed to be filled with what fell from the rich man’s table, but instead the dogs would come and lick his sores.One day the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried.And being in torment in Hades, he looked up and saw Abraham a long way off, with Lazarus at his side.

Indeed, You put them in slippery places; You make them fall into ruin.How suddenly they become a desolation! They come to an end, swept away by terrors.Like one waking from a dream, Lord, when arising, You will despise their image.

Again, the Devil took Him to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor.And he said to Him,“ I will give You all these things if You will fall down and worship me.”Then Jesus told him,“ Go away, Satan! For it is written: Worship the Lord your God, and serve only Him.”
