Then they asked him,“ Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”“ Elijah does come first and restores all things,” he replied.“ Why then is it written that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be treated with contempt?But I tell you that Elijah has come, and they did whatever they pleased to him, just as it is written about him.”

Look, I am going to send you the prophet Elijah before the great and terrible day of the LORD comes.

“ This is John the Baptist,” he told his servants.“ He has been raised from the dead, and that’s why miraculous powers are at work in him.”

Herod the tetrarch heard about everything that was going on. He was perplexed, because some said that John had been raised from the dead,some that Elijah had appeared, and others that one of the ancient prophets had risen.“ I beheaded John,” Herod said,“ but who is this I hear such things about?” And he wanted to see him.

They replied,“ Some say John the Baptist; others, Elijah; still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

King Herod heard about it, because Jesus’s name had become well known. Some said,“ John the Baptist has been raised from the dead, and that’s why miraculous powers are at work in him.”But others said,“ He’s Elijah.” Still others said,“ He’s a prophet, like one of the prophets from long ago.”When Herod heard of it, he said,“ John, the one I beheaded, has been raised!”
