One day the Pharisees and Sadducees came to test Jesus, demanding that he show them a miraculous sign from heaven to prove his authority.He replied,“ You know the saying,‘ Red sky at night means fair weather tomorrow;red sky in the morning means foul weather all day.’ You know how to interpret the weather signs in the sky, but you don’t know how to interpret the signs of the times!Only an evil, adulterous generation would demand a miraculous sign, but the only sign I will give them is the sign of the prophet Jonah.” Then Jesus left them and went away.Later, after they crossed to the other side of the lake, the disciples discovered they had forgotten to bring any bread.“ Watch out!” Jesus warned them.“ Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”At this they began to argue with each other because they hadn’t brought any bread.Jesus knew what they were saying, so he said,“ You have so little faith! Why are you arguing with each other about having no bread?Don’t you understand even yet? Don’t you remember the 5,000 I fed with five loaves, and the baskets of leftovers you picked up?Or the 4,000 I fed with seven loaves, and the large baskets of leftovers you picked up?Why can’t you understand that I’m not talking about bread? So again I say,‘ Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.’”Then at last they understood that he wasn’t speaking about the yeast in bread, but about the deceptive teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

As Jesus was leaving, the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees became hostile and tried to provoke him with many questions.They wanted to trap him into saying something they could use against him.

But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees with his reply, they met together to question him again.One of them, an expert in religious law, tried to trap him with this question:

Then Jesus turned to the crowd and said,“ When you see clouds beginning to form in the west, you say,‘ Here comes a shower.’ And you are right.When the south wind blows, you say,‘ Today will be a scorcher.’ And it is.You fools! You know how to interpret the weather signs of the earth and sky, but you don’t know how to interpret the present times.“ Why can’t you decide for yourselves what is right?

One day an expert in religious law stood up to test Jesus by asking him this question:“ Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?”

Then the Pharisees met together to plot how to trap Jesus into saying something for which he could be arrested.

And Peter said,“ How could the two of you even think of conspiring to test the Spirit of the Lord like this? The young men who buried your husband are just outside the door, and they will carry you out, too.”

It is foolish to the Jews, who ask for signs from heaven. And it is foolish to the Greeks, who seek human wisdom.So when we preach that Christ was crucified, the Jews are offended and the Gentiles say it’s all nonsense.

One day some Pharisees and teachers of religious law arrived from Jerusalem to see Jesus.They noticed that some of his disciples failed to follow the Jewish ritual of hand washing before eating.

They answered,“ Show us a miraculous sign if you want us to believe in you. What can you do?

So once more the people complained against Moses.“ Give us water to drink!” they demanded.“ Quiet!” Moses replied.“ Why are you complaining against me? And why are you testing the Lord?”

But when the teachers of religious law who were Pharisees saw him eating with tax collectors and other sinners, they asked his disciples,“ Why does he eat with such scum?”

Jesus asked,“ Will you never believe in me unless you see miraculous signs and wonders?”

That same day Jesus was approached by some Sadducees— religious leaders who say there is no resurrection from the dead. They posed this question:

Should we pay them, or shouldn’t we?” Jesus saw through their hypocrisy and said,“ Why are you trying to trap me? Show me a Roman coin, and I’ll tell you.”

“ Is there a single one of us rulers or Pharisees who believes in him?

When Jesus returned to the Temple and began teaching, the leading priests and elders came up to him. They demanded,“ By what authority are you doing all these things? Who gave you the right?”

Some Pharisees came and tried to trap him with this question:“ Should a man be allowed to divorce his wife for just any reason?”
