耶穌叫門徒前來，說：“我憐憫這一群人，因為他們跟我在一起已經有三天，也沒有甚麼吃的；我不想叫他們餓著肚子回去，恐怕他們在路上暈倒。”門徒對他說：“我們在這曠野地方，哪裡有足夠的食物給這許多的人吃飽呢？”耶穌問他們：“你們有多少餅？”他們說：“七個餅和幾條小魚。”他就吩咐群眾坐在地上，拿起那七個餅和那些魚，祝謝了，擘開遞給門徒，門徒又分給眾人。大家都吃了，並且吃飽了。他們把剩下的零碎拾起來，裝滿了七個大籃子。吃的人，除了婦女和孩子，共有四千。耶穌解散了群眾，就上了船，來到馬加丹地區。

耶穌一下船，看見一大群人，就憐憫他們，因為他們好像羊沒有牧人一樣，就開始教導他們許多事。天晚了，門徒前來對他說：“這裡是曠野的地方，天已經很晚了，請叫他們散開，好讓他們往周圍的田舍村莊去，自己買點東西吃。”耶穌回答他們：“你們給他們吃吧！”門徒說：“要我們去買兩百銀幣的餅給他們吃嗎？”耶穌說：“去看看你們有多少餅！”他們知道了，就說：“五個餅，還有兩條魚。”耶穌吩咐他們叫大家分組坐在青草地上。他們就一排一排地坐了下來，有一百的，有五十的。耶穌拿起這五個餅、兩條魚，望著天，祝謝了；然後把餅擘開，遞給門徒擺在群眾面前，又把兩條魚也分給群眾。大家都吃了，並且吃飽了。他們把剩下的零碎撿起來，裝滿了十二個籃子，吃餅的人，男人就有五千。
