The Lord said: These people approach me with their speeches to honor me with lip-service, yet their hearts are far from me, and human rules direct their worship of me.

They claim to know God, but they deny him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient, and unfit for any good work.

So my people come to you in crowds, sit in front of you, and hear your words, but they don’t obey them. Their mouths go on passionately, but their hearts pursue dishonest profit.

Hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied correctly about you when he said:This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.They worship me in vain, teaching as doctrines human commands.”

“ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. For you don’t go in, and you don’t allow those entering to go in.

What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but does not have works? Can such faith save him?If a brother or sister is without clothes and lacks daily foodand one of you says to them,“ Go in peace, stay warm, and be well fed,” but you don’t give them what the body needs, what good is it?In the same way faith, if it does not have works, is dead by itself.

holding to the form of godliness but denying its power. Avoid these people.

But the Lord said to him,“ Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and evil.Fools! Didn’t he who made the outside make the inside too?But give from what is within to the poor, and then everything is clean for you.“ But woe to you Pharisees! You give a tenth of mint, rue, and every kind of herb, and you bypass justice and love for God. These things you should have done without neglecting the others.“ Woe to you Pharisees! You love the front seat in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces.“ Woe to you! You are like unmarked graves; the people who walk over them don’t know it.”

but I know you— that you have no love for God within you.

If I had not done the works among them that no one else has done, they would not be guilty of sin. Now they have seen and hated both me and my Father.

You’re doing what your father does.”“ We weren’t born of sexual immorality,” they said.“ We have one Father— God.”Jesus said to them,“ If God were your Father, you would love me, because I came from God and I am here. For I didn’t come on my own, but he sent me.
