太陽快要下山，十二使徒進前來對他說：「請叫眾人散去，他們好往四面村莊鄉鎮裏去借宿和找吃的，因為我們這裏地方偏僻。」耶穌對他們說：「你們給他們吃吧！」他們說：「我們不過有五個餅、兩條魚，若不去為這許多人買食物就不夠。」那時，男人約有五千。耶穌對門徒說：「叫他們分組坐下，每組大約五十個人。」門徒就這樣做了，叫眾人都坐下。耶穌拿着這五個餅和兩條魚，望着天祝福，擘開，遞給門徒，擺在眾人面前。所有的人都吃，並且吃飽了。他們把剩下的碎屑收拾起來，裝滿了十二個籃子。

傍晚的時候，門徒進前來，說：「這地方偏僻，而且時候已經晚了，請叫眾人散去，他們好進村子，自己買些食物。」耶穌對他們說：「不用他們去，你們給他們吃吧！」門徒說：「我們這裏只有五個餅、兩條魚。」耶穌說：「拿過來給我。」於是他吩咐眾人坐在草地上，就拿着這五個餅和兩條魚，望着天祝福，擘開餅，遞給門徒，門徒又遞給眾人。他們都吃，並且吃飽了。門徒把剩下的碎屑收拾起來，裝滿了十二個籃子。吃的人中，男的約有五千，還不算婦女和孩子。

耶穌舉目看見一大羣人來，就對腓力說：「我們到哪裏去買餅給這些人吃呢？」他說這話是要考驗腓力，他自己原知道要怎樣做。腓力回答他：「就是兩百個銀幣的餅也不夠給他們每人吃一點點。」有一個門徒，就是西門‧彼得的弟弟安得烈，對耶穌說：「這裏有一個孩子，帶着五個大麥餅和兩條魚，但是分給這麼多人還算甚麼呢？」耶穌說：「你們叫大家坐下。」那地方的草多，人們就坐下，男人的數目約有五千。耶穌拿起餅來，祝謝了，就分給坐着的人，也同樣分了魚，都照他們所要的來分。他們吃飽後，耶穌對門徒說：「把剩下的碎屑收拾起來，免得糟蹋了。」他們就把那五個大麥餅的碎屑，就是大家吃剩的，收拾起來，裝滿了十二個籃子。人們看見耶穌所行的神蹟，就說：「這真是那要到世上來的先知！」耶穌知道他們要來強迫他作王，就獨自又退到山上去了。
