太阳开始平西的时候，十二使徒前来对耶稣说：“请遣散人群，好让他们到周围的村庄和田舍去借宿、找食物，因为我们这里是个荒僻的地方。”但耶稣对他们说：“你们给他们吃的吧。”他们说：“我们只有五个饼和两条鱼，除非我们去为全体民众买食物。”当时，男人就约有五千。耶稣对他的门徒们说：“叫他们分组坐下，每组约五十人。”门徒们就如此行，叫大家都坐下。耶稣拿起这五个饼和两条鱼，抬头望天，祝福了，然后掰开，不断递给门徒们，让他们分给众人。大家吃了，并且都吃饱了。他们把剩下的碎块收拾起来，装满了十二个篮子。

黄昏的时候，门徒们来到耶稣面前，说：“这是个荒僻的地方，而且天已经晚了。请遣散人群，好让他们到村庄去为自己买些食物。”但耶稣说：“他们不需要离开，你们给他们吃的吧。”门徒们对耶稣说：“我们这里除了五个饼和两条鱼，就没有什么了。”耶稣说：“拿到我这里来。”于是耶稣吩咐众人坐在草地上，就拿起这五个饼和两条鱼，抬头望天，祝福了，然后掰开饼，递给门徒们，他们又分给众人。大家都吃了，并且吃饱了。他们把剩下的碎块收拾起来，装满了十二个篮子。吃的人，不算妇女和孩子，约有五千。

耶稣举目观看，见一大群人向他走来，就对腓力说：“我们从哪里买饼给这些人吃呢？”他说这话是要试试腓力，其实他自己已经知道要做什么了。腓力回答：“就是两百个银币的饼，也不够每个人吃一小块！”他的一个门徒，就是西门彼得的弟弟安得烈，对耶稣说：“这里有个孩子，带了五个大麦饼和两条鱼。可是对这么多人，这些算什么呢？”耶稣说：“让他们坐下来。”那地方草多，他们坐了下来；男人的数目约有五千。耶稣就拿起饼来，祝谢以后，分给那些坐着的人，把鱼也如此分了，他们要多少就给多少。大家吃饱了以后，耶稣就对他的门徒们说：“把剩下的碎块收拾起来，免得浪费。”他们就把大家吃剩的那五个大麦饼的碎块收拾起来，装满了十二个篮子。众人看见耶稣所行的神迹，就说：“这个人确实是那位要来到世上的先知！”耶稣看出他们要来强迫他做王，就又独自退到山上去了。
