天將晚的時候，十二門徒來到他跟前，說：“請解散眾人，好讓他們往周圍的田舍村莊，去找地方住，找東西吃，因為我們這裡是曠野。”他說：“你們給他們吃吧！”他們說：“我們所有的，不過是五個餅兩條魚，除非去為這些人另買食物。”原來男人就約有五千。他對門徒說：“叫他們一組一組地坐下，每組約五十人。”門徒就照他的話，叫眾人坐下。耶穌拿起這五個餅，兩條魚，望著天，祝謝了，擘開遞給門徒，擺在眾人面前。他們都吃飽了，把剩下的零碎拾起來，裝滿了十二個籃子。

黃昏的時候，門徒前來對他說：“這是曠野的地方，時間也不早了，請叫群眾散開，好讓他們往村裡去，買自己的食物吧。”耶穌回答：“他們用不著離開，你們給他們吃吧！”但門徒說：“我們這裡除了五個餅和兩條魚，甚麼也沒有。”他說：“拿過來給我。”於是吩咐群眾坐在草地上，拿起那五個餅兩條魚，望著天，祝謝了；然後把餅擘開，遞給門徒，門徒又分給群眾。大家都吃了，並且吃飽了，他們把剩下的零碎拾起來，裝滿了十二個籃子。吃的人，除了婦女和孩子，約有五千。

耶穌舉目觀看，見一大群人向他走過來，就對腓力說：“我們從哪裡買餅給這些人吃呢？”他說這話，是要試驗腓力，因他自己早已知道要怎樣作。腓力回答：“就算二百銀幣買的餅，每人分一點，也是不夠的。”有一個門徒，就是西門．彼得的弟弟安得烈，對耶穌說：“這裡有個小孩子，帶著五個大麥餅、兩條魚；只是分給這麼多人，有甚麼用呢？”耶穌吩咐他們：“你們叫眾人坐下。”原來那地方的草很多，眾人就坐下，單是男人的數目約有五千。耶穌拿起餅來，祝謝了，就分給坐著的人；分魚也是這樣，都是隨著他們所要的。他們吃飽了之後，耶穌對門徒說：“把剩下的零碎收拾起來，免得浪費。”門徒就把眾人吃剩那五個大麥餅的零碎收拾起來，裝滿了十二個籃子。眾人看見耶穌所行的神蹟，就說：“這真是那要到世上來的先知。”耶穌知道群眾要來強迫他作王，就獨自又退到山上去了。
