約翰在監獄裏聽見基督所做的事，就派他的門徒去，

耶穌聽見約翰下了監，就退到加利利去；

原來，希律為他兄弟腓力的妻子希羅底的緣故，把約翰抓住綁了，關進監獄，因為約翰曾對他說：「你佔有這婦人是不合法的。」希律就想要殺他，可是怕民眾，因為他們認為約翰是先知。到了希律的生日，希羅底的女兒在眾人面前跳舞，使希律歡喜，於是希律發誓許諾隨她所求的給她。女兒被母親指使，就說：「請把施洗約翰的頭放在盤子裏，拿來給我。」王就憂愁，然而因他所發的誓，又因同席的人，就下令給她；於是打發人去，在監獄裏斬了約翰，把頭放在盤子裏，拿來給那女孩，她拿去給她母親。約翰的門徒來，把屍體領去埋葬了，又去告訴耶穌。
