However, Jesus did not permit him, but said to him,“ Go home to your friends, and tell them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He has had compassion on you.”

Jesus did not let him, but said,“ Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.”

And He did not let him, but He* said to him,“ Go home to your people and report to them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He had mercy on you.”

And he suffered him not, but saith unto him, Go to thy house unto thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and how he had mercy on thee.

But He would not let him; instead, He told him,“ Go back home to your own people, and report to them how much the Lord has done for you and how He has had mercy on you.”

Howbeit Jesus suffered him not, but saith unto him, Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee.

But Jesus did not permit him to do so. Instead, he said to him,“ Go to your home and to your people and tell them what the Lord has done for you, that he had mercy on you.”

Come and hear, all you who fear God, And I will declare what He has done for my soul.

Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven, all of whose works are truth, and His ways justice. And those who walk in pride He is able to put down.

“ Come, see a Man who told me all things that I ever did. Could this be the Christ?”

“ My manner of life from my youth, which was spent from the beginning among my own nation at Jerusalem, all the Jews know.They knew me from the first, if they were willing to testify, that according to the strictest sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee.And now I stand and am judged for the hope of the promise made by God to our fathers.To this promise our twelve tribes, earnestly serving God night and day, hope to attain. For this hope’s sake, King Agrippa, I am accused by the Jews.Why should it be thought incredible by you that God raises the dead?“ Indeed, I myself thought I must do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth.This I also did in Jerusalem, and many of the saints I shut up in prison, having received authority from the chief priests; and when they were put to death, I cast my vote against them.And I punished them often in every synagogue and compelled them to blaspheme; and being exceedingly enraged against them, I persecuted them even to foreign cities.“ While thus occupied, as I journeyed to Damascus with authority and commission from the chief priests,at midday, O king, along the road I saw a light from heaven, brighter than the sun, shining around me and those who journeyed with me.And when we all had fallen to the ground, I heard a voice speaking to me and saying in the Hebrew language,‘ saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me? It is hard for you to kick against the goads.’So I said,‘ Who are You, Lord?’ And He said,‘ I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.But rise and stand on your feet; for I have appeared to you for this purpose, to make you a minister and a witness both of the things which you have seen and of the things which I will yet reveal to you.I will deliver you from the Jewish people, as well as from the Gentiles, to whom I now send you,to open their eyes, in order to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith in Me.’“ Therefore, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision,but declared first to those in Damascus and in Jerusalem, and throughout all the region of Judea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent, turn to God, and do works befitting repentance.For these reasons the Jews seized me in the temple and tried to kill me.Therefore, having obtained help from God, to this day I stand, witnessing both to small and great, saying no other things than those which the prophets and Moses said would come—that the Christ would suffer, that He would be the first to rise from the dead, and would proclaim light to the Jewish people and to the Gentiles.”Now as he thus made his defense, Festus said with a loud voice,“ Paul, you are beside yourself! Much learning is driving you mad!”But he said,“ I am not mad, most noble Festus, but speak the words of truth and reason.For the king, before whom I also speak freely, knows these things; for I am convinced that none of these things escapes his attention, since this thing was not done in a corner.King Agrippa, do you believe the prophets? I know that you do believe.”Then Agrippa said to Paul,“ You almost persuade me to become a Christian.”And Paul said,“ I would to God that not only you, but also all who hear me today, might become both almost and altogether such as I am, except for these chains.”

Then King Darius wrote: To all peoples, nations, and languages that dwell in all the earth: Peace be multiplied to you.I make a decree that in every dominion of my kingdom men must tremble and fear before the God of Daniel. For He is the living God, And steadfast forever; His kingdom is the one which shall not be destroyed, And His dominion shall endure to the end.He delivers and rescues, And He works signs and wonders In heaven and on earth, Who has delivered Daniel from the power of the lions.

This is the writing of Hezekiah king of Judah, when he had been sick and had recovered from his sickness:I said,“ In the prime of my life I shall go to the gates of Sheol; I am deprived of the remainder of my years.”I said,“ I shall not see YAH, The Lord in the land of the living; I shall observe man no more among the inhabitants of the world.My life span is gone, Taken from me like a shepherd’s tent; I have cut off my life like a weaver. He cuts me off from the loom; From day until night You make an end of me.I have considered until morning— Like a lion, So He breaks all my bones; From day until night You make an end of me.Like a crane or a swallow, so I chattered; I mourned like a dove; My eyes fail from looking upward. O Lord, I am oppressed; Undertake for me!“ What shall I say? He has both spoken to me, And He Himself has done it. I shall walk carefully all my years In the bitterness of my soul.O Lord, by these things men live; And in all these things is the life of my spirit; So You will restore me and make me live.Indeed it was for my own peace That I had great bitterness; But You have lovingly delivered my soul from the pit of corruption, For You have cast all my sins behind Your back.For Sheol cannot thank You, Death cannot praise You; Those who go down to the pit cannot hope for Your truth.The living, the living man, he shall praise You, As I do this day; The father shall make known Your truth to the children.“ The Lord was ready to save me; Therefore we will sing my songs with stringed instruments All the days of our life, in the house of the Lord.”

Nebuchadnezzar the king, To all peoples, nations, and languages that dwell in all the earth: Peace be multiplied to you.I thought it good to declare the signs and wonders that the Most High God has worked for me.How great are His signs, And how mighty His wonders! His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, And His dominion is from generation to generation.

“ Brethren and fathers, hear my defense before you now.”And when they heard that he spoke to them in the Hebrew language, they kept all the more silent. Then he said:“ I am indeed a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, taught according to the strictness of our fathers’ law, and was zealous toward God as you all are today.I persecuted this Way to the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women,as also the high priest bears me witness, and all the council of the elders, from whom I also received letters to the brethren, and went to Damascus to bring in chains even those who were there to Jerusalem to be punished.“ Now it happened, as I journeyed and came near Damascus at about noon, suddenly a great light from heaven shone around me.And I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me,‘ saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?’So I answered,‘ Who are You, Lord?’ And He said to me,‘ I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting.’“ And those who were with me indeed saw the light and were afraid, but they did not hear the voice of Him who spoke to me.So I said,‘ What shall I do, Lord?’ And the Lord said to me,‘ Arise and go into Damascus, and there you will be told all things which are appointed for you to do.’And since I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of those who were with me, I came into Damascus.“ Then a certain Ananias, a devout man according to the law, having a good testimony with all the Jews who dwelt there,came to me; and he stood and said to me,‘ Brother Saul, receive your sight.’ And at that same hour I looked up at him.Then he said,‘ The God of our fathers has chosen you that you should know His will, and see the Just One, and hear the voice of His mouth.For you will be His witness to all men of what you have seen and heard.And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.’“ Now it happened, when I returned to Jerusalem and was praying in the temple, that I was in a tranceand saw Him saying to me,‘ Make haste and get out of Jerusalem quickly, for they will not receive your testimony concerning Me.’So I said,‘ Lord, they know that in every synagogue I imprisoned and beat those who believe on You.And when the blood of Your martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by consenting to his death, and guarding the clothes of those who were killing him.’Then He said to me,‘ Depart, for I will send you far from here to the Gentiles.’”

Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the fish’s belly.And he said:“ I cried out to the Lord because of my affliction, And He answered me.“ Out of the belly of Sheol I cried, And You heard my voice.For You cast me into the deep, Into the heart of the seas, And the floods surrounded me; All Your billows and Your waves passed over me.Then I said,‘ I have been cast out of Your sight; Yet I will look again toward Your holy temple.’The waters surrounded me, even to my soul; The deep closed around me; Weeds were wrapped around my head.I went down to the moorings of the mountains; The earth with its bars closed behind me forever; Yet You have brought up my life from the pit, O Lord, my God.“ When my soul fainted within me, I remembered the Lord; And my prayer went up to You, Into Your holy temple.“ Those who regard worthless idols Forsake their own Mercy.But I will sacrifice to You With the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay what I have vowed. Salvation is of the Lord.”So the Lord spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.
