Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a cushion. The disciples woke him up, shouting,“ Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to drown?”

Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him,“ Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”

This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin.

After all this, Lord, must you still refuse to help us? Will you continue to be silent and punish us?

But if you pray to God and seek the favor of the Almighty,and if you are pure and live with integrity, he will surely rise up and restore your happy home.

Has the Lord rejected me forever? Will he never again be kind to me?Is his unfailing love gone forever? Have his promises permanently failed?Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has he slammed the door on his compassion? InterludeAnd I said,“ This is my fate; the Most High has turned his hand against me.”

About noontime Elijah began mocking them.“ You’ll have to shout louder,” he scoffed,“ for surely he is a god! Perhaps he is daydreaming, or is relieving himself. Or maybe he is away on a trip, or is asleep and needs to be wakened!”So they shouted louder, and following their normal custom, they cut themselves with knives and swords until the blood gushed out.They raved all afternoon until the time of the evening sacrifice, but still there was no sound, no reply, no response.

For the Lord has called you back from your grief— as though you were a young wife abandoned by her husband,” says your God.“ For a brief moment I abandoned you, but with great compassion I will take you back.In a burst of anger I turned my face away for a little while. But with everlasting love I will have compassion on you,” says the Lord, your Redeemer.

O Lord, why do you stand so far away? Why do you hide when I am in trouble?The wicked arrogantly hunt down the poor. Let them be caught in the evil they plan for others.

The disciples went and woke him up, shouting,“ Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!”

O Jacob, how can you say the Lord does not see your troubles? O Israel, how can you say God ignores your rights?Have you never heard? Have you never understood? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of all the earth. He never grows weak or weary. No one can measure the depths of his understanding.

Yet Jerusalem says,“ The Lord has deserted us; the Lord has forgotten us.”“ Never! Can a mother forget her nursing child? Can she feel no love for the child she has borne? But even if that were possible, I would not forget you!See, I have written your name on the palms of my hands. Always in my mind is a picture of Jerusalem’s walls in ruins.

Lord, look down from heaven; look from your holy, glorious home, and see us. Where is the passion and the might you used to show on our behalf? Where are your mercy and compassion now?

Wake up, wake up, O Lord! Clothe yourself with strength! Flex your mighty right arm! Rouse yourself as in the days of old when you slew Egypt, the dragon of the Nile.Are you not the same today, the one who dried up the sea, making a path of escape through the depths so that your people could cross over?

Wake up, O Lord! Why do you sleep? Get up! Do not reject us forever.Why do you look the other way? Why do you ignore our suffering and oppression?

Therefore, it was necessary for him to be made in every respect like us, his brothers and sisters, so that he could be our merciful and faithful High Priest before God. Then he could offer a sacrifice that would take away the sins of the people.

My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? Why are you so far away when I groan for help?Every day I call to you, my God, but you do not answer. Every night I lift my voice, but I find no relief.

The disciples went and woke him up, shouting,“ Master, Master, we’re going to drown!” When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and the raging waves. Suddenly the storm stopped and all was calm.

Jacob’s well was there; and Jesus, tired from the long walk, sat wearily beside the well about noontime.

And though I cry and shout, he has shut out my prayers.
