但那些想要發財的人就陷在誘惑、羅網和許多無知有害的慾望中，使人沉淪，以致敗壞和滅亡。貪財是萬惡之根。有人因貪戀錢財而背離信仰，用許多愁苦把自己刺透了。

至於那些今世富足的人，你要囑咐他們不要自高，也不要倚賴靠不住的錢財；要倚靠那厚賜萬物給我們享受的上帝。

不要愛世界和世界上的東西，若有人愛世界，愛父的心就不在他裏面了。因為凡世界上的東西，好比肉體的情慾、眼目的情慾和今生的驕傲，都不是從父來的，而是從世界來的。這世界和世上的情慾都要消逝，惟獨那遵行上帝旨意的人永遠常存。

使你們從今以後不再隨從人的情慾，只順從上帝的旨意，在世度餘下的光陰。因為你們從前隨從外邦人的心意，生活在淫蕩、情慾、醉酒、荒宴、狂飲和可憎的偶像崇拜中，時候已經夠了。

應當一無掛慮，只要凡事藉着禱告、祈求和感謝，將你們所要的告訴上帝。

耶穌對門徒說：「我實在告訴你們，財主進天國是難的。

你們不要求吃甚麼，喝甚麼，也不要掛慮。這都是世上的外邦人所求的；你們需要這些東西，你們的父都知道。

「你們要謹慎，免得被貪食、醉酒和今生的憂慮壓住你們的心，那日子就忽然臨到你們，

凡屬我不結果子的枝子，他就剪掉；凡結果子的，他就修剪乾淨，使枝子結果子更多。

我為我葡萄園所做的之外，還有甚麼可做的呢？我指望它結葡萄，怎麼倒結了野葡萄呢？

他刨挖園子，清除石頭，栽種上等的葡萄樹，在園中蓋了一座樓，又鑿出酒池；指望它結葡萄，反倒結了野葡萄。

喜愛銀子的，不因得銀子滿足；喜愛財富的，也不因得利益知足。這也是虛空。貨物增添，吃的人也增添，物主得甚麼益處呢？不過眼看而已！勞碌的人不拘吃多吃少，睡得香甜；富人的豐足卻不容他睡覺。我見日光之下有一件令人憂傷的禍患，就是財主積存財富，反害自己。他因遭遇不幸，財產盡失；他生了兒子，手裏卻一無所有。他怎樣從母胎赤身而來，也必照樣赤身而去；他所勞碌得來的，手中分毫不能帶去。這是一件令人憂傷的禍患。他來的時候怎樣，去的時候也必怎樣。他為風勞碌有甚麼益處呢？

他自己心裏想：『我的出產沒有地方儲藏，怎麼辦呢？』就說：『我要這麼辦：要把我的倉庫拆了，另蓋更大的，在那裏好儲藏我一切的糧食和財物，然後要對我自己說：你這個人哪，你有許多財物積存，可供多年享用，只管安安逸逸吃喝快樂吧！』上帝卻對他說：『無知的人哪！今夜就要你的性命，你所預備的要歸誰呢？』凡為自己積財，在上帝面前卻不富足的，也是這樣。」

主回答說：「馬大，馬大，你為許多的事操心煩惱，

有人孤單無雙，無子無兄弟，竟勞碌不息，眼目也不以財富為滿足。他說：「我勞碌，自己卻不享福，到底是為了誰呢？」這也是虛空，是極沉重的擔子。

你定睛在財富，它就消失，因為它必長翅膀，如鷹向天飛去。

你們有了這幾樣，再繼續增長，就必使你們在認識我們的主耶穌基督上，不至於懶散和不結果子了。

眾人異口同聲地推辭。頭一個對他說：『我買了一塊地，必須去看看。請你准我辭了。』另一個說：『我買了五對牛，要去試一試。請你准我辭了。』又有一個說：『我才娶了妻子，所以不能去。』

這樣的人是你們愛筵上的污點；他們無所懼怕地同你們宴樂，彷彿牧人只顧餵飽自己。他們是無雨的浮雲，被風飄蕩；是秋天沒有果子的樹，死而又死，連根被拔出來；

現在斧子已經放在樹根上，凡不結好果子的樹就砍下來，丟在火裏。

因為底馬貪愛現今的世界，已經離棄我，往帖撒羅尼迦去了；革勒士往加拉太去；提多往撻馬太去；

就如一塊田地吸收過屢次下的雨水，生長蔬菜，合乎耕種的人用，就從上帝得福。這塊田地若長荊棘和蒺藜，必被廢棄，近於詛咒，結局就是焚燒。
