Suddenly, a man in the synagogue who was possessed by an evil spirit cried out,“ Why are you interfering with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are— the Holy One of God!”

During that time the devil came and said to him,“ If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become loaves of bread.”

Many were possessed by demons; and the demons came out at his command, shouting,“ You are the Son of God!” But because they knew he was the Messiah, he rebuked them and refused to let them speak.

As soon as he saw Jesus, he shrieked and fell down in front of him. Then he screamed,“ Why are you interfering with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? Please, I beg you, don’t torture me!”

She followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting,“ These men are servants of the Most High God, and they have come to tell you how to be saved.”

You say you have faith, for you believe that there is one God. Good for you! Even the demons believe this, and they tremble in terror.

So the demons begged,“ If you cast us out, send us into that herd of pigs.”

and said,“ If you are the Son of God, jump off! For the Scriptures say,‘ He will order his angels to protect you. And they will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone.’”

A group of Jews was traveling from town to town casting out evil spirits. They tried to use the name of the Lord Jesus in their incantation, saying,“ I command you in the name of Jesus, whom Paul preaches, to come out!”Seven sons of Sceva, a leading priest, were doing this.But one time when they tried it, the evil spirit replied,“ I know Jesus, and I know Paul, but who are you?”Then the man with the evil spirit leaped on them, overpowered them, and attacked them with such violence that they fled from the house, naked and battered.The story of what happened spread quickly all through Ephesus, to Jews and Greeks alike. A solemn fear descended on the city, and the name of the Lord Jesus was greatly honored.

Day and night he wandered among the burial caves and in the hills, howling and cutting himself with sharp stones.When Jesus was still some distance away, the man saw him, ran to meet him, and bowed low before him.

Then the disciples worshiped him.“ You really are the Son of God!” they exclaimed.
