安息日那天，耶穌從麥田經過；他的門徒餓了，就摘了些麥穗來吃。法利賽人看見了，就對他說：“你看，你的門徒作了安息日不可作的事。”耶穌對他們說：“大衛和跟他在一起的人，在飢餓的時候所作的，你們沒有念過嗎？他不是進了神的殿，吃了他和跟他在一起的人不可以吃，只有祭司才可以吃的陳設餅嗎？律法書上記著：安息日，祭司在殿裡供職，觸犯了安息日，也不算有罪；你們也沒有念過嗎？我告訴你們，這裡有一位是比聖殿更大的。如果你們明白‘我喜愛憐憫，不喜愛祭祀’這句話的意思，就不會把無罪的定罪了。因為人子是安息日的主。”

“你進了你鄰舍的葡萄園，你可以隨意吃飽葡萄，只是不可裝在你的器皿裡。你進了你鄰舍的麥田，你可以用手摘麥穗，只是不可在你鄰舍的麥田裡揮動鐮刀。”
