Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. Some people came and asked Jesus,“ How is it that John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees are fasting, but yours are not?”

John’s disciples and the Pharisees were going without eating. Some people came to Jesus. They said to him,“ John’s disciples are fasting. The disciples of the Pharisees are also fasting. But your disciples are not. Why aren’t they?”

Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. And people came and said to him,“ Why do John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?”

Once when John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting, some people came to Jesus and asked,“ Why don’t your disciples fast like John’s disciples and the Pharisees do?”

Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. People came and asked him,“ Why do John’s disciples and the Pharisees’ disciples fast, but your disciples do not fast?”

John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting; and they* came and* said to Him,“ Why do John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?”

And John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting: and they come and say unto him, Why do John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but thy disciples fast not?

Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. People came and asked Him,“ Why do John’s disciples and the Pharisees’ disciples fast, but Your disciples do not fast?”

And the disciples of John and of the Pharisees used to fast: and they come and say unto him, Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast, but thy disciples fast not?

Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. So they came to Jesus and said,“ Why do the disciples of John and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples don’t fast?”

John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting, and they came and asked him,“ Why do John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples don’t fast?”

I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess.’

“ Moreover, when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to be fasting. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.

so that you do not appear to men to be fasting, but to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.

Then the disciples of John came to Him, saying,“ Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but Your disciples do not fast?”And Jesus said to them,“ Can the friends of the bridegroom mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.No one puts a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; for the patch pulls away from the garment, and the tear is made worse.Nor do they put new wine into old wineskins, or else the wineskins break, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are ruined. But they put new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.”

Then they said to Him,“ Why do the disciples of John fast often and make prayers, and likewise those of the Pharisees, but Yours eat and drink?”And He said to them,“ Can you make the friends of the bridegroom fast while the bridegroom is with them?But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them; then they will fast in those days.”Then He spoke a parable to them:“ No one puts a piece from a new garment on an old one; otherwise the new makes a tear, and also the piece that was taken out of the new does not match the old.And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine will burst the wineskins and be spilled, and the wineskins will be ruined.But new wine must be put into new wineskins, and both are preserved.And no one, having drunk old wine, immediately desires new; for he says,‘ The old is better.’”

But all their works they do to be seen by men. They make their phylacteries broad and enlarge the borders of their garments.

For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God.
